Engine 9111
Functional description of valve stroke
adjustment
The valve stroke adjustment system
consists of switchable flat-base tappets
which are actuated by means of an
electrohydraulic 3/2-way valve. Since two
different cam shapes are used on the
camshaft, it is possible to select the
different cams (by switching the flat-base
tappets) so that their respective valve
stroke characteristics act on the engine.
These flat-base tappets are mounted on the
inlet side of the engine. The flat-base
tappets consist of two nested tappets which
can be interlocked hydraulically by means
of a pin. Once interlocked, the inner tappet
comes into contact with the small cam and
the outer tappet with the large cam. An
element for compensating the valve
clearance is always integrated in the power
flow of the tappet.
