Hi All, Just as an update, changed the alternator and the issue is solved. After I pulled the old one out I came to the conclusion, not worth the hassle with a second instal and the old alternator was super corroded. Thanks for a ll the help! !!

Alternator or voltage regulator?reported fixed · Original poster

Ahsai, I am going to be able to get a replacement alternator, but the shop that sold it to me (Parts Heaven) doesn't think the alternator is the problem, but they'll do it anyway. I'm still not entirely convinced either. What bothers me is that the symptoms are *exactly* the same with old and new alternator. Same length of time until the symptoms appear, same manner in which they appear. That seems awfully unlikely f

Thanks Mark, The fault was the same before the alternator was changed for a new Bosch one so the alternator is eliminated. Same with the battery. Changing that didn't fix the problem.

he calculated amp throughput that the manger thinks the battery needs to recover it is still the same. So it charges with a high voltage and high amperage (981 alternators are duty cycle driven and can adjust voltage and amps independently with a variable internal resistance). So your instrument cluster is still showing 15-16v. Your start stop still doesn't work and the new battery will take a battering. Now let's code the new battery in, all values are set to 100%, the alternator load is now minimal, the instrument cluster

d the P/N 99660701901 cable not 1903. Not sure why, but that's what I will order. I think it may be specific to older 996s ('99). I'm also going to replace the Alternator Regulator while I've got it all apart. I ordered F00M-144-136 from Pelican.

y. I was careful enough and was able to save the original cable plastic end also. Mine had zero corrosion and looked fine ('99 cabriolet). I did not remove the alternator either. The alternator cable attachment nut is tricky to get to, but a 13mm socket on a 1/4" drive ratchet worked fine. I changed the starter motor while I was in there.

Alternator-starter cable replacement simplifiedsuggestion

Could be corroded Y-cable that runs to strter and alternator - usually corrods at the starter connection Y-location. If this is the case, replace the cabe.

When you say you replaced the cable, do you mean the starter/alternator cable? Part no 996-607-019-01? When everything is new, the voltmeter should read ~14 and drop to 13.5v when all the fans turn on. If you replaced that cable, then I have some other DIY tricks to see if you have a ground issue.

Does anyone know whether there is suppose to be a support bracket for the back underside of the alternator to support the weight of the alternator or a sleeve that inserts in the upper alternator mounting hole that would stabilize the alternator from twisting. I've already replaced 3 Engine Block Water Cap 996-101-021-51 on my 2001 996. Any suggestion on how to keep this from breaking again?

, pretty sure my voltage regulator on my 2002 996 turbo tip has bitten the dust and as I'm going to paying to have it fixed, I might as well replace the entire alternator, which as far as I know, is 20 years old. Problem is that I see blueprint parts online advertised as "manual transmission only", whereas Design911 parts diagram lists the same part number for both manual (M480) and tiptronic (M249) cars, which is 99760301212. Can anyone tell me if it's the same alternator on both the manual and tip cars please? Thanks in ad

There are ultimately 4 powercables and 2 main grounds to the main power loom the Y shaped piece connecting the jump post, starter and alternator is either 996 607 019 01 (-01 cars) 996 607 019 03 (01- cars) There's also short section from the jump start post to the n/s of the gearbox where it then bolts to the main long section running down the belly of the car - that's the connection I'm also going to clean and scrub with a wire brush There was a TSB re. early 997 versions of the Y cable i.e. early
