My cable had no signs of corrosion, so I replaced only the starter and that fixed the hot start/no crank issue. Fortunately for me, the PO replaced both the battery and the alternator trying to address the issue.
Alternator-starter cable replacement simplifiedreported fixed
I had the same issue and after two batteries and three testing of the alternator I replaced the starter and problem solved. Pull you alternator and have it tested, if it tests good consider replacing your starter. Lot of DIY information on it.

is the most likely problem. But also check the gound strap from the engine to the body, make sure the contacts are clean and good. I was having issues with my starter. First I replaced the battery, no real effect. Then I replaced the starter, still had problems. Then on the advice of another owner I checked the ground strap, took it off, cleaned everything up and reinstalled it, problem was gone.
Starter or battery issue? (Solved with new battery)reported fixed
I had the same thing, sometimes it made the noise other times it didn't. I had the starter replaced and problem solved. Don't know how you'd trouble shoot it, my garage knew it was the starter straight away. Cost 300 supplied and fitted in UK ($560ish)

Well, Finally got back to the car today. I went ahead and replaced the Starter cable from the Jump terminal to the starter (short cable) and it has seemed to fixed the problem. The job really wasn't that big of a deal. Took my time and everything seemed to go well. One suggestion I do have is make sure you pay attention to all the little vacuum lines they can make a big difference on how the car runs after getting it back together. Do

Interesting. I'm on the fence right now on replacing more battery/starter cables. The y-cable is new, along with the starter (done last month). If the issue persists with slow start when heat soaked, I'll have to scope out a more thorough wiring update. If only it was easier to get to those parts, the work itself isn't very bad!

So still not fully understanding the system. Makes me think its one of two things: I installed the ignition switch wrong if the start lock relay actually should not function (click) when key is turned to on, but only when turned to start position. When we hard ground the control terminal on the starter relay the starter runs but the engine will not start. We are not getting any codes now but the car still does not crank. If we get the cheap PIWIS tools mentioned here: https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...only-75-a.html will we be able detect the presence of the key with the rfid pill when it is inserted in the ingntion switch?

OK. So I have successfully installed a new Alternator/Starter cable. I followed the directions here: http://www.renntech.org/forums/tutor...e-replacement/ with one BIG change. I was able to pull the cable out through the space between the AC compressor and the intake manifold (towards the charging pole) without loosening/removing the AC compressor. This is on a '99 996 cabriolet. I'm not sure if that is relevant or no

99660701901are you talking about the wire that goes from the alternator to the starter? If so.. I just replaced this wire and I have the part # its 996 607 019 01 In my AOS replacement thread I came across a severly corroded wire. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...adventure.html

99660410301I mentioned that I replaced my starter, and in fact that was the reason I replaced the cable, slow to no hot starts with the occasional screeching starter motor. The new starter came from Amazon; brand new Bosch # SR0808N, with part number 996 604 103 01; $207 2 day delivery. Same exact starter that Porsche used, but $1,000 cheaper than a Porsche branded one. ** Update - I dissected my old start

99610622652I'm almost halfway there. I've got the alternator out and am on my way to the starter and aos. So far i have only broken the joining socket, part number 996 106 226 52. When i broke that and the coolant came out, i was like wtf? The clamps that hold that hose on looked to be something that i couldn't replace, but once i got the belt off and the other crap, it doesn't look as difficult. I guess i might as well replace the plugs while things a
