Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I test drove a 2004 996TT yesterday, and all was great except this high-pitched whining noise, sort of like the whistle of a teapot or a kettle, that I could hear from the back of the car when driving at low RPMs (like when slowing down to a stop sign). The noise was not audible at idle with the car stationary, only when driving at very low speed and low RPMs. The seller said "it's ok, all 996TTs do that". Clearly I'd like to figure that out before I fork out the cash. The car will go through a PPI next week and I'll ask the shop to focus on that issue, but I was hoping to get some thoughts from your collective wisdom in the meantime.

POST 2Original post

That kind of describes the noise a turbo makes...

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks - I've been directed to a TSB that was issued which describes this problem as caused by the power steering reservoir. Hopefully that'll be it.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
