Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

For a 996 what would you say is too much mileage, if your buying from a dealership not a private party, and records are not available?

Re: milage question Prices on 996s can be very attractive but there are a lot of pitfalls that can cost a lot of money if you aren't careful and do your homework. The 996 (non Turbo) ran from 1999 through 2004 so the oldest cars are now more than 10 years old. The M96 engine had issues w/ oil leaks of various types, the RMS being one of these, and the potential for intermediate shaft failure (IMS). It is not possible to judge a car by mileage alone. Although very low mileage is typically considered a plus, w/ the M96 engine low miles may only conceal a major problem, such as RMS, that has yet to surface. As w/ all Porsches there are progressive improvements through the model cycle. I would suggest beginning your research at Excellence magazine's website buyers guide. I would not jump into buying a 996 Carrera without some background research of the model and market because there are a lot of these cars around so it's very worthwhile to take your time and shop around for a well maintained car with service records. Good luck!
