Hi all! Just wanted to say "hello" and I'm glad I FINALLY was able to achieve a life-long dream to own a P-car! I purchased an '01 996 C4 back in October. The car had 39K miles on it and PPI had checked out fine. I live in Northern Indiana so it has been put to bed for the winter but I was able to put 1K miles on it before the snow hit. What a thrill! Been a lurker for far too long! (Pics to follow)

congrats on the Pcar!
Congrats! Get some winter tires... I drove my 911 all winter long when I lived it Indiana! Come to think of it, I drive it all winter long here in Colorado! You're lucky that you have the Tire Rack store right there in South Bend. It's one of the few, if not the only Tire Rack warehouse that actually installs tires on your car.
no pic no congrats... just kidding get a pick up there already. you have an avatar - no excuse!
Welcome and congrats on the new ride
Welcome and enjoy. Pics or ban, learn it,live it.
Welcome to Rennlist and the 996 family! I second the suggestion to get some spare wheels and some winter-grade tires so you can drive it when the opportunity comes and the snow and ice have left, even if temporarily (Hey! Even in Indiana there are some days in the winter that are driveable).
Welcome to rennlist!

Me too.... ;-)
Man, you guys are tough! The thing is, I just posted from the Rennlist app for the iPhone and my pics are on my home computer, although the avatar IS my car. That said, I *know* how this works from many months of lurking, so you better believe that I will post those pics ASAP! I purchased the car WITH a extra set of snows already mounted. Honestly, since I had just purchased the car in October I didn't get as much use out of it as I should have. I wanted to drive it in the winter but I was dissuaded when I read that the engine undercarriage was only protected in the GT3 model of the '01. Salt and dirt from our long winters can be a nasty, insidious problem. BTW, I had read that in "The Essential 996 Companion". I am crawling out of my skin to get back behind the wheel! Thanks for the warm welcome, pending pics, of course! :-)
already with the excusses just kidding, Welcome

Theres either a error or you read wrong. I am sure others will confirm but rust if you keep it clean is not really a concern. These cars are among the best rust proofed cars sold. They make BMW's look bad.
Welcome, even though there are no pics yet.

Herman, I was simply quoting what Adrian Streather said in "Porsche 996 The Essential Companion". Per pg.133: "AWD versions of the 996 are winter-capable vehicles, but the damage that can be done to them over a period of time by exposure to salt is simply not worth the risk. The rear underside of the 996 and its engine/engine bay are totally exposed to the elements (unlike previous series which had a rear engine cover). Highly concentrated salted water spraying up into the engine bay causes serious corrosion" So, as a new ower I really didn't want to take the chance. Moot point now as winter is almost behind us! Thanks for the insight though, maybe next year I will throw the snows on and have some fun!
Nice, major welcome now! Enjoy!
Welcome! Enjoy in good health and drive the heck out of it!
welcome.... nice 3x black.comment, that is not all exactly true.... US cars get a coat of cosmoline for extra protection. Drive it enjoy it in the winter and enjoy....... with that said, I dont drive my c4 in the winter.
Another C4! Yayyy. Now lets talk about the important stuff. MODS! First thing is to get rid of the front plate holder, than the pretty orange sidemarkers, than 4x4 height, than the.....

I think Adrian was erring considerably on the side of caution with that one. My '00 has ten winters under its belt, all in salt and brine-soaked Toronto. The paint isn't without a few battle scars, but the undercarriage is just fine. My experience has been that it's not the body you have to keep an eye on, but the rads, a/c condensers and various couplings and clamps that can suffer in the salt. It's not a bad idea, but it is a choice: accept the task of more vigilant maintenance, and in return get months more use out of the car.
