Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am considering buying a second hand 996 that has had three owners but full PSH and looks in superb condition. It has 65K on the clock which is genuine. Are there any likely problems I should be aware of. I have read a report that someone had an IMS failure that required a full engine rebuild. What is an IMS failure? (sorry if I am being thick about this!) L892VLU

POST 2Original post

Hi Michael, I've moved this to the 996 forum, might get more advice there. Have a good read through the faqs and technical articles as well. [ ]

Hello, Any links to Pictures, Price and info on the Car?

POST 4Original post

The IMS is the intermediate shaft. Think of it like a cambelt failure on a regular car. Typical damage if it fails will be similar hense the rebuild. There is a great resource of information for owners/prospective owners about all the possible engine faults that can occur on the Hartech website. Definitely worth a read but dont get yourself too downhearted. Reading 'common' faults can make you think its the worst car in the world but really for 99% of owners it'll be the most reliable car they've ever owned. They built them well the 996's. Which model are you looking at?
