Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As per the title. I was tinkering with my new toy yesterday and took the air filter out, there's a foam section in the bottom held in with a plastic frame and screws. The foam started to disintegrate when touched. I can't see what function is does. What's the opinion? Leave as is? Remove? Replace? I can't find a replacement listed anywhere. TIA Mark

POST 2Original post

That sounds like the water drain .. the air intake vent is under the spoiler and can take in water at times so this gets rid of it . Edit .. if it has no drain holes behind then its a sound deadening device for the intake air .. remove and throw away .

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks DeMort, Drain holes seem to be separate from this foam piece. The only other reference I could find was some sound deadening measure. As it's crumbling to dust I'll take your advice and get rid of it and see if there's any discernible difference in intake noise. Id there is I'll find some replacement foam. Thanks Mark

POST 4Original post

...yesterday I removed the airbox on my 996.2 to change the filter and whilst this foam 'baffle' was in good condition I couldn't see a purpose for it other than a noise controlling part...it sits under the filter thus has no bearing on filtration... Installed new Mann filter and will assess the difference; doubtful if discernible? The one thing I did note was that the filter at the narrow end was significantly less grubby than the wider end because the narrow end sits directly above the foam 'baffle' ?

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
