Hi everyone. I have just signed up after years of jumping in and out of the forum. I have always found it an informative site, full of passionate, knowledgeable, helpful members. So I finally decided to stop being a freebie scrounger and pay up. I have always been an air-cooled fan, but now I'm considering a 996 as a daily driver. They seem to offer great value, despite the conflicting, and to be honest confusing reports about the IMS?RMS issues. I am considering a car for sale at GR Autogallery in Grand Rapids, MI. Does anyone have any experience of this dealer? As an out of state buyer, I would obviously want to get a PPI done as the description/pictures sent by a dealer don't give a real feel for the car. I know that is one of the downsides of buying beyond reasonable travelling distance, you can't pop in and give it the once over (even as inexperienced as I may be, I do know a few basic things) before forking out money for a PPI. Do any of you have recommendations for who might give me a thorough PPI in the Grand Rapids area? Finally I welcome any pointers/advice from anyone about the joys and perils of 996 ownership. Thanks

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Maybe start a post with..."GR Autogallery" in Grand Rapids help. Might get quicker results.
Where are you located? Unless you're in a state with relatively little 996 inventory (Alaska, maybe?), why not find a local car? The last time I was in the Holland/GR area, I don't recall seeing many import mechanics. GR is home-towny and there are a LOT of GM/domestic vehicles around those parts...a 996-centric indie may be hard to come by.
any reputable dealer will help take cars to local dealerships for inspection, find the porsche dealer and ask them about it, then ask your used car dealer to do it.
Or go to the best Indies in your area and tell them what you are looking for. Sometimes they get first notice that a good customer car is coming on the market.
If you are considering the 99 C4 they say it is in Metro Detroit...not Grand Rapids!

Ironically, I bought both my 951 (Kalamazoo) and 928S4 (Elkhart) in that neck of the Rust Belt. There are quite a few collectors of German cars in that area. I suspect you can find an indy. FWIW, I didn't get a ppi on either of those cars.
I moved to Grand Rapids last year. Euro Autoworks was recommended to me by another member. I have been there once and had a great experience. The owner is very active in the local PCA. I would recommend them for a ppi. I have not dealt with GR Auto Gallery, but drive by their sign everyday. I'd be happy to stop by and take a look.
Thanks for all the helpful replies. So far, I have had responses from Euro Autiwerks and Automotive Techniques (the main dealer Porsche of Farmington Hills never bothered to respond!). Does anyone have experience/a preference for either of the aforementioned independents?
I have had experience with Automotive Techniques. They are an excellent choice for a PPI, but quite a distance away from Grand Rapids (about 2 hours or so). PM me if you have any detailed questions.
