Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi, I am looking at buying a 2007 porsche cayman 987.1 2.7l, however from viewing the service history I have noticed it has had a camshaft replaced. Considering it has only done 68,000 miles, is this something to worry about? Thanks, Liam

POST 2Original post

Are you sure it was not a cam sensor and just written down poorly? I have heard of the cam sensors failing. Also if I’m reading that correctly the price of $65 for a camshaft is way low but the price for a sensor could be around that.

POST 3Original post

Cheers for the fast response. I have just received a further page stating further info. Thanks, Liam

POST 4Original post

I had a camshaft sensor fail on a 987.2 . Threw a code, but that was the only indication something was amiss. Converting pounds to Can $ it was a bit cheaper than what's on the invoice though.

POST 6Original post

Do you reckon it was likely just a sensor then. £484 for a sensor seemed a lot to me

POST 7Original post

Looked up the cost of cams in the U.S. and exhaust cam is listed around $650 a piece and intake about $950 a piece and a sensor is only around $50 so I would assume the cam was replaced. The question is why? I find it hard to believe a properly oiled cam would wear out in that amount of miles. Was there an oiling issue? Did metal enter the engine? Or wasit a casting defect that did no harm internally. I would ask more questions if you can.

Thanks for the response. If I'm honest, I'm in no rush to buy one so would rather wait for one with a more clear service record. I agree it seems odd that it would need to be replaced one such a low mileage car. Thanks for everyone's help Liam
