There have been numerous posts on several threads about the phantom 30 horsepower that Porsche has aledgedly de-tuned from the Cayman S engine. So far as I know, the only semi-authoritative source for this is the recent <u>Road and Track</u> article, which rather obliqely speculated that the engine's displacement and maturity should have produced more. Does anyone have something firm that we can pin our hopes on? I am getting all heated thinking that there may be an easy 10% hp upgrade with just a chip change. /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/drive.gif

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

If you take a look at the RUF 3400S (A boxster with a 1st generation Carrera 996 3.4L engine swap), you'll see that it had 310hp! The original Carrera 3.4L engine had300hp and 258lb-ft torque before RUF tuned it up a bit. Here's a link: http://www.realdriver.com/road_tests/ruf_3400s/ruf_3400s_3.php . So here's the Cayman's spec's: <div class="related"></div> <div class="innerContent"><a class="illustratedModelLinkInfo" onclick="gotoUrlIE(this.href)" href="http://www.porsche.com/usa/models/cayman/cayman-s/"> <span><strong class="modelInfo1"> Vehicle Type Mid-engine, 3.4 liters, 6 cyl. 295 hp (SAE) @ 6,250 rpm 250 lb-ft @ 4,400-6,000 rpm[/b] <strong class="modelInfo2"> Performance 0-60 mph: 5.1 secs. . . . was that also the same mag article/company whichreported that the US cars bucked the system for the 1st time with the Porsche entire range and has a better exhaust note than the Euro spec car? Yeh right, don't believe everything you read! Dean
Uber, What about Unichip? 5 to 9% more HP. http://www.unichip.us/
While Porsche may have detuned the car it is programming, I find it hard to believe that they killed 30hp from retarded ignition timing. There probably are also intake and exhaust restrictions, a milder cam, and maybe either smaller or less well finished ports. The question is way the torque curve has such a sharp drop off after 6000 rpm. If you could maintain 250lbf-ft of torque to 7000 rpm you would have 330hp.
Could they have held back in order to have a 2007 or 2008 with my hp? It would be an easy add if it has actually been detuned as many have suggested. Also at that time the 911 would have increased in hp and the Cayman would no longer pose a threat. Does anyone know what the specs are going to be on the Cayman non S? Russ

DavidNJ has hit the real question. If 30 more HP is as simple as a chip change, then Porsche would have gone to a lot of trouble for nothing. Chances are, as he says, that a real de-tuning would be more profound and harder to undo. It would be quite costly to invest in a new cam, re-porting, etc. Having said that, I hope you're wrong, Dave.
