Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Just purchased a 2000 996 Cabrio (C2) from a very unscrupulous dealer in cocoa fl. (Extreme Motorcars). One of the many issues I was not informed about is when the 996 is warm there is an oil smell and upon inspection oil smoke can be seen exiting the drivers side rear wheel well. There is no noticeable oil leaking when the engine is not running, not a drop. Being new to the boxter engine my "guess" is a leaky valve cover dripping on the header, do that sound reasonable? How difficult a job? if not, any other ideas of what else it could be? Thanks for your help! Rick.

POST 2Original post

Hello Rick, Hopefully it is not your valve cover, as that would be a major repair. Look to see if there is a leak by the spark plug coils. 9 times out of 10 the spark plug tubes will be the culprit. Very easy to change and inexpensive, look it up in the forum. Fernando
