Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Guys I posted thisonce but cannot find it so here goes again. Took my 996 for a 90 mile drive today and I when back left it for an hour then returned and started it and water was coming from exhaust spitting out!! I know it does this when cold but is it normal for hot cars which have stood for an hour to do it also? Do all 996 owners notice this?

POST 2Original post

Hi Barrie, To a varying extent all petrol internal combustion engines produce water. When you burn a hydrocarbon, which is what petrol is, you get a chemical reaction where the Hydrogen molecules (x2) and the Oxygen molecules (x1) join together the form H2O. This as you will know is the chemical symbol for water. It's just a by-product of combustion and nothing to worry about. :thumb: Craig.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Brill thanks for that. its just I have owned diesel cars for so long and was suprised at the amount of water my 996 spits out from the exhausts, do the ehxhausts get hotter than other petrol engined cars as they are right at the rear?Could this explain the amount of water produced

POST 4Original post

Remember barriejames that even in an hour if the weather is cold the exhaust mufflers will cool down very quickly. So that H2O vapour generated from combustion will quickly condense on the cold muffler as water. I assume you have not lost water from the cooling stystem to point to anythinhy more serious :dont know: Regards Big Bob :bye:

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The water has not dropped so that I have noticed maybe about 2mm down in 1000 miles and is still at the max level. I suppose its just me being over cautious and have never really seen this amount of water from exhaust pipes, being a once a week used car I suppose will not help and there is no way I guess reduce this water build up during periods of standing?

POST 6Original post

Proceed with confidence. PS I think Speed Yellow 8) is a discreet colour by the way :thumb: . Regards Big Bob :bye:

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Bob I feel much calmer now, and can get on with living the dream!!! I chose speed yellow as my first and only option, although red would be cool 2!!

POST 8Original post

As Big Bob says, keep an eye on your cooling water reservoir- if it doesn't drop then there's nothing to be worried about  Ray :thumb:

POST 9Original post

Hi its not unusual I worried about my 911 when I first bought it . Same thing loads of water but it is normal the previous reply deals with why.Keep an eye on your water level for a short time to be sure if you are worried I am sure all will be well Mike

POST 10Original post

This is why cheap exhaust systems rust from the inside out - they look just fine a couple of minutes before they rot through and fall off. It is rubbish knowledge like this that makes me an invaluable pub quiz team member (emphasis on the member).
