The plastic silver piece with the gear layout numbering on.. how does it come off? Appears to just be clipped in place but feels as though I'm about to break it whilst I'm trying to pry it off! Is there a certain knack or way to do it? My 917 style knob is now here from Mexico so need to butcher my current gaiter to fit it.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I have seen a thread about this in the past, or may have been somewhere else on the web. The part you're on about doesn't come straight off vertically. It comes off at a 45 degree angle. That's all I can remember. Have a search and you may find something.
