Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I was wondering how many of you were planning on leaving off the front plate. It may be different state to state, but here it seems none of the Porsches I have seen have front plates. Would a front plate block any of the airflow? Thanks Russ

POST 2Original post

None required in NM. In other states I've always had it off but available with some story about needing the correct drill bit to mount it or some such story. Never stopped because of a missing front plate but was stopped for speeding. Then I was able to nudge the front up close enough to a barrier so that the missing plate wasn't noticed. It sure messes up the lines of Porsches.

POST 3Original post

I asked my dealer if I can have my car without a front plate. He said yes as long as I sign a disclaimer,so thats what I intend to do.

POST 4Original post

It's illegal in California. Ileave it offanyway and I do get stopped for it...

POST 5Original post

SF, That was a pretty good idea. I do not want a front plate at all, it just looks terrible. I think I will also ask my dealer to leave it off and volunteer to signa disclaimer. Thanks Russ

POST 6Original post

Would not mind getting rid of the one on the back if I could. This doesn't go real well with my Artic Silver.

POST 7Original post

SF, Maybe you should have ordered Speed Yellow! LOL! Russ

POST 8Original post

I’m in Southern CA and have never displayed a front plate and will NOT start with my Cayman, even though it is the law to display one. What I do if given a fix-it ticket is temporarily affix the front plate with Velcro, drilled holes will not happen. zornet

POST 9Original post

Not required in North Carolina. I would only put one on if there was a really classy Porsche plate, very wide, that would add class to the car. I haven't seen such an animal yet.

POST 10Original post

Uber or SF, I am sure one of you must know what is this if it is not an air intake. I am talking about the black space in the center of the 2 air intakes where the plate would go, does it serve any useful purpose? Thanks Russ

POST 11Original post

Russ, I had a look at that space today on the Cayman in Torrance. It serves no purpose and has a plastic cover in it. Looks like it could house another radiator. I had heard that the Tiptronics do get some extra cooling. I wonder if this area is where that happens? JHellow

POST 12Original post

JHellow, Thanks for that report. I kind of expected as much but I sure was going to check it out tomorrow when I see the Cay in person. I don't want front plates even if that space does serve no purpose. Russ

POST 13Original post

This round cover may hide an eye bolt for Cayman recovery, for a means to hoist or pull the car from trouble. zornet

POST 14Original post

The center grill would have a radiator in it for transmission cooling if you had the tiptronic automatic, the round cap is where the tow eye bolt screws into.

POST 15Original post

Thank K-Man, My next questioin was 'what the heck is that cap on one side?'. You covered it. So now I guess I will ask my dealer to not drill holes in the bumper for my plates. If you look close you can see 2 small holes for the plate. Russ

POST 16Original post

The two 'small holes ' for the plates are pre drilled pilot holes, so I don't think you will be able to avoid them. However they are drilled bigger by the dealer to fit the plates. you should be able to prevent this.

POST 17Original post

JJC, Thanks! I will make sure they leave them as is!! Russ

POST 18Original post

Can't u put the front plate just behind the windshield (to a bottom corner)? I see many Ontarioians driving like this, especially when their license frames/holes are damaged. (Front plates are mandatory in Canada)

POST 19Original post

Well I could sure have it handy if I ever get pulled over and stick it up there real quick! I have never seen that here in the Islands, although I do see a lot of cars with no front plate. I will have to ask someone, but for all I know it might not be illegal to leave it off? Russ
