What are people's ideas on cup car or race car graphics on a red 996 aero? I want something different when the paint goes on as truth be told, my paintings not great. I want to stand out anyway as my car is more of an outlaw or track day car. I had thought of a Carrera script over the rear arches 997 gt3rs style or something more like a 2 tone scheme as I still have to paint the bolt on parts. The flying lizard springs to mind. I'm open to all ideas here so fire away. I'd also like to be promoting my own parts after I get a shake down period to make sure they're good All ideas and pictures welcome

Hi Ned, how good/bad is the paint? Don't expect a factory finish, if it looks good from a couple of paces that's not bad for a home garage job. I'm not a fan of race car graphics on a road car and especially not the script over a 997 GT3 RS. A simple silver/red take on the Gulf livery might look good or a variation of the current heritage 911.uk poster car at the top of the page (it'll probably disappear now!)
Hi munky. It's bad enough that I've already decided to hit it again. From 10 feet away it would've been nice but not great up close. I'll give it another lash and see how I get on
Guards Red is probably one of the more difficult colours to pull off a sort of outlaw look. If you Google "red Porsche race car" you should get some inspiration. I had a look and I think a sort of rally look works well on red. I think you have to go all in to make that sort of look work but I'd avoid anything that looks too much like an RS https://www.drivestraat.com/detail/1967-911-_150 https://www.drivestraat.com/detail/1969-911-Race-Car_189 https://petrolicious.com/articles/this-marlboro-themed-porsche-911-is-unfiltered
You might consider a custom wrap, but otherwise, if you're thinking about an outlaw style on a red car, a front bumper/bonnet in white and a rear bumper in black might work. You can then add a different accent colour like say blue mirrors and spoiler maybe. And then add some race numbers; white numbers on red doors, or black numbers on white bonnet maybe. And then tie it at togther with some side stripes in a combination of black, white and blue for example.
coca-cola or salzberg (one of my fav) graphics always look good!
Some great ideas but I'll try my hand at the painting here again. I'm always open to ideas but I know that graphics on anything other than a proper race car, are very hard to pull off. The only thing that's red atm is the shell. Everything else is still midnight blue. I wonder how a different colour front would work? White? Yellow?
What about something like this?
How about some Matt black accents, Abarth style? Matt black's quite easy to pull off, especially as a wrap and covers a multitude of sins:
I think that red and black looks great. You could also perhaps artificially weather the paint with some temporary airbrushing like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/AwesomeCarMods/comments/cmb5bj/crazy_wrap_on_this_porsche/ I give up trying to embed the picture!
More great ideas. I'd be painting rather than wrapping. The weathered looks interesting. Something like a rat look. If that was the case, I could easily get away with my imperfections in the paint. I also like the idea of being able to paint the front bumper and wings black and then all I really would have to mix is the doors. I could do the deck lid and rear number red and the wing in black. And maybe wing mirrors red if the front of the doors are black. This is the sort of thing that would be very easy to make a pigs ear of the car. But as my painting isn't perfect it might be a good way of going for something different. I also have the option of midnight blue and red as everything except the shell is still midnight blue. Slap on some decals and see how it goes?
I'd maybe reverse that black and red look as I like these "race" styling cues when there's a purpose to them. Like the matte black bonnet historically used to eliminate glare, the red front bumper so you're more visible in a rear view, the yellow headlights so GT class cars could be distinguished in a rear view etc. I don't really like race livery just for the sake of it.
Race livery on a road car serves two purposes: 1. To conceal a less than showroom fresh paint finish (if you've ever seen the paint on most race card you would appreciate the finish is somewhat agricultural) 2. It looks cool and is a bit of fun. Vive la difference I say! I've driven one or two loud and aggressive looking race cars on the road and the thumbs up from the ten year old boys constitutes all the street cred I need.
The black front bumper and wings looks great. There is a fine line between cool and tacky with this stuff though, so it's worth the extra thought to get it right.
Personally I don't think that the 996 pulls off different colour bumpers well, unlike the aircooled cars they are the wrong shape, best to make them blend in.
