Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, So I got a 2004 996 that has documentation of engine replacement by Porsche dealer under warranty after a IMS failure back in 2007. However, I looked under the car and the engine serial is the original one. So what does that mean? would it have been rebuilt instead of complete replacement ? Which IMS do you guys think it has if it was rebuilt in 2007 , could they have put in that Non-serviceable one if it was a rebuild job instead of full replacement ? Or could a replacement engine have kept the original serial number in that spot somehow ? Thanks for your time !!

POST 2Original post

Contact the dealer that did the " replacement " and see if they can provide any details .

Already did that and theyre showing engine replacement but very vaguely written according to the service rep. Pretty much just has a code for engine . But would it be possible to replace and keep that original Seriel number on the bottom, is it just attached to a reusable part ?

The engine serial number is stamped on the casting . Generally speaking ( but not always ) a Porsche dealer replaced engine will have the letters AT within the serial number . I don't see any way a replacement engine would have the original serial number . Sounds like the dealer may have done a IMS replacement on the original engine .

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
