I got the red "check coolant level" light come on a few miles from home so got it back no problem without the temperature going anywhere near the end of the guage.

Refill the header with fresh water, leave the cap off and start the engine, top up the header and when it's full replace the cap.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Travelling home from a long drive this afternoon i heard a strange whistling noise followed by my coolant low warning light coming on, thankfully i was close to home so got it on my drive to see a leak from under the engine and fluid smoking off the engine parts ...... should I restart the engine in the morning to drive to the nearest garage or is it best left alone?

POST 2Original post

the worst thing you can do to an engine is overheat it so tread carefully, do you have RAC roadside assistance? if so i'd have it towed in

POST 3Original post

You won't harm anything when everything is cold. Refill the header with fresh water, leave the cap off and start the engine, top up the header and when it's full replace the cap. As the engine gets hot, you may need to take your car round the block, you should be able to see where your leak is. Common areas are the header tank itself and the right hand engine hose as it bends around the body below the air filter. If you garage is close then you'll be ok to get it there assuming the temperature stays low. As already stated you can cause catastrophic failure if the engine is allowed to overheat, so be careful and be prepared to stop and let everything cool down before topping up the system again and moving off. The system contains superheated steam at normal operating temperature so take care when removing the cap as you can get severe burns if you're not careful. Ray

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks - for that, the engine temperature was only slightly above "halfway" so i think that was ok. I got the red "check coolant level" light come on a few miles from home so got it back no problem without the temperature going anywhere near the end of the guage. i think the smoke was from fluid dripping on the hot engine parts. Its now dripping on my drive!!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

take a look at this picture, that belt is damaged and I just pulled some charred remains of it from under the engine!

POST 6Original post

Hmm, looks like the belt has been running against a siezed pulley, could be more serious than I first thought. Call your preferred garage and get their view. Ray :?:

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

a seized pulley? that might make sense because i did hear a kind of whistling noise - is that anything to do with coolant?

POST 8Original post

Check the water pump also, mine went a few months back. Taran :bandit:

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well taran - thats exactly what it turned out to be - water pump! Green flag took it to Strasse and they changed it the same day and its being dropped off at my house tomorrow at 7.30am :thumb:
