Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How many of you have rear wipers? I don't see many 996's with rear wipers and it didn't even occur to me that I bought one with a rear wiper. It's useless and throws off the look of the car. Has anybody actually had it removed? Was it hard?

POST 2Original post

Useless in California maybe, but I use it when it rains.

POST 3Original post

I don't know where you live, but I can assure you where I live it's not useless. In the bad weather it is invaluable. I also totaly disagree that it throws the look of the car off, but again that is personal taste. My current fleet of three cars, 996, Alfa 145 and Audi Allroad all have rear wipers and my previous Audis and Porsches all had rear window wipers. We don't leave home without one. Ciao, Adrian.

POST 5Original post

Many 911's, beginning with the Turbo, came equipped with rear wipers. It's a nice "historical" touch to the 996 that is, as you noticed, becoming rare. It's a classic detail that I would never "delete".

POST 7Original post

I live in South Florida, where it is always the rainy season, and I would be thrilled silly if my 996 had a rear wiper.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I live in Vancouver, so I'm about to head into 6 months of rain. I need my front wipers, but I don't look back enough to warrant rear wipers. Anyways, based on your feedback, I'll keep the rear wiper (for now). Thanks all.

POST 9Original post

Not having a rear wiper has been an issue. The rain sheets off at speeds above 50 km anyway. My car sleeps in the garage at night, so once it snows I won't have to be clearing it off every morning. Rear wiper might be nice, but certainly not a deal breaker.

POST 10Original post

It adds more weight than it's worth on a 911 in my opinion. Plus, it's ugly. Not on my car, but "to each his own".

POST 11Original post

Mine came with a rear wiper. It's hardly essential in SoCal, but my inner British soul is happy to have any additional rain gear

POST 12Original post

I think I am old enough now to wipe my own rear, thank you!

POST 13Original post

There is an easy solution. If you are driving along and you notice rain hitting your rear window you are driving too slowly.......speed up!

POST 15Original post

Living in Oregon, I thought I would need it, but I'm glad I don't. I don't like the look of it. RainX works just fine.

POST 16Original post

My 996 C2 has one and I think it adds character

POST 17Original post

It's an option. It was on my last 911 but thankfully not this one................

POST 18Original post

A rear window wiper would not look good on a car with a GT3 body kit.

POST 19Original post

I dislike it very much and it is totaly useless at almost any speed. Maybe in stop and go traffic it might be of some use but it is so ugly I simply would not buy a 911 with one. And yes , where I live we have a LOT of rain.

POST 20Original post

I like mine and the other day when it was raining in my car (sunroof drain broken) it was nice to be able to clear one side of the rear window

POST 21Original post

Personally, I hate those things. They just ruin the back of the car. I think it just throws off the symmetry or something. I wouldn't buy a car with one. -Charles

POST 22Original post

It could be a useful thing, but when I was shopping for a 996, I particularly looked for one without a rear wiper. I think it does really disrupts the flow on the rear. (I mean the looks, not physics) I'd say rear wipers are more appropriate for wagons and SUV's, and maybe that's the image that most of us are trying not to associate our 911's with.

POST 23Original post

I love the look of my rear wiper. I don't know why there isn't an intermitent setting, so that the rear is already cleared when you need it.

POST 24Original post

Lately I have had to park outside and I use it every morning to wipe the dew off before I back out. So I like mine and really never thought it looked bad.

POST 25Original post

You love the look of the wiper? To each their own!!!! Cheers!

POST 26Original post

It's a classic touch; not a buying or selling point, but nice to get if you can.
