Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Whilst driving my 996c4s at about 70mph it suddenly made a strange noise and released a huge white/grey smoke cloud everythings fine with the car, anyone had this or know of reason, regards Mike Brown

POST 2Original post

Well it's certainly not normal, but I guess you already know that. Personally, even if the car seems to be okay I'd get it into an OPC for a service and treat yourself to a nice new extended warranty if you have not already got one. How long had you been driving before the hiccup?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your reply I had been driving for about an hour quite hard, but not too hard 5000 rpm max and only up to about 70 have done 60 miles in it since and everythings fine, also my indie checked and put it on the computer and no faults were shown. Trouble with the warranty is I only do about 3/4k per year, so mathmatically it always seems so expensive, Mike

POST 4Original post

Had you just been round a sharpish corner with lateral G?

POST 5Original post

Sounds like it was clearing out the cobwebs. I guess you'll just have to monitor it on the basis no error codes were reported. Hopefully it was just a glitch. :thumb:

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Haren ,no not really, I had turned sharp left at reasonable speed and then powered to a sweeping gentle right up to about 70ish, I have checked the car absolutely all over and she is as good as before this happened, I was amazed at the smoke and my stomach got that terrible feeling of anxiety of really believing the motor had blown. Regards Mike

POST 7Original post

Mike - dont worry about it mate, i have had this happen to me and my car is A1. Freaked me out at the time though and it went in and out several times to Strasse before i believed them that there was (quote) "Nothing at all wrong with that engine Andy"! Only happens to me when powering out of a long slight bend and going up through the gears (i have a tip) and then only above 70 mph in my case. so quite rare! Its a quick expulsion of oil and no after effects at all. i've done over 20,000 miles since this first happened and the cars fine! others on this forum have had similar "events".

996 f1 smoke cloud Hi, Andy, thank you so much for your reply,it really really worried me, such a shock, never seen so much smoke from a car before, but yes I was on a right hand bend, and like your car mine seems fine, but we do tend to worry a little I think, what do you think regards warranty I dont have one, regards Mike

POST 9Original post

It sounds like it needs a good old Italian Tuning. Take it out and thrash it within an inch of it's life for half an hour. Works with a 308.

http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=28377&highlight=smoke http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=29082&highlight=smoke Mike, try and re-create, could be the same problem i had as in above links, only ever happened after a hard left turn.

POST 11Original post

Sounds like the classic broken oil separator problem to me. Cheap part but an OPC wants to take the engine out to change it. It is possible to change in situ, but it's fiddly.
