Imagine my horror out today in my 996 and overtaken by a diesel Q7 4.2 so we had a bit of a duel on a M way slip road and I just could not get past despite red lining in all gears from around 20 mph to 120mph then just gave up as did not want to enter 150 plus mph zone!!! Guess slightly disappointed with my 911 now as should be able to kick a diesel tank ass from a rolling start and whilst I made ground on it it was not by much!!! Now wheres that Audi brochure.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

naa, where's the 996TT brochure
Sure it wasn't a V12 TDI?
Defo a 4.2 diesel not the mighty 12 cylinder just a well eh!!! and before anyone asks my 996 is running as sweet as so no excuses!!! If mine had been been a tip box it would have trashed me I'm pretty sure.
'Under the bonnet of the new Audi Q7 4.2 TDI is the most powerful V8 diesel engine that Audi has ever built. The eight-cylinder unit, which already powers the A8 luxury saloon, has a displacement of 4.2 litres and delivers 240 kW (326 bhp) and 760 Nm of torque - available constantly from 1,800 to 2,500 rpm. This gives the Audi Q7 4.2 TDI the performance of a sports car. It accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 236 km/h." So it tops out at 146mph. If you'd have kept going then it should have been no problem, he was probably starting to run out of go. JJ
Great info dont feel so bad now. I knew I could beat it top end just did not fancy 150 plus on a Saturday afternoon on the M20!!! Just seems strange to see a barge moving along at the same pace as a 911. In truth I was catching throughout just not a s quick as I would have liked I guess.
I think the difference was on the 760NM of torque that the Q7 has....which is more than double the 911..... but you are right I would not feel confortable if I could not overtake a diesel!!!! :eh!: Theo
Yes - it is the torque that does it - But it handles like a routemaster - very hard to turn, especially compared to X5. LOJO
The world doesn't stop moving so you soon get left behind. Looking at 0-60 mph figures for the turbo is a good illustration (times are approx) 993 turbo: 4.5 sec 996 turbo: 4.0 sec 997 turbo: 3.5 sec
When I was sightseeing in Germany and blatting down the autobahns I had a tangle with an old guy in an A8 (not sure what engine was in it) just about managed to keep him behind. Couldn't pull away until he reached his 155 limiter. Had another incident with a youth in a scooby, nailed me on a roundabout and sped off in the distance like I was stood still on the motorway... I thought why did I pay £50k+ for this car when he obviously hadn't paid more than £8k for his... I came up alongside the youth and gave him a thumbs up when he was exciting the motorway. would have been poor sport to do anything else and I didn't have a hand grenade to throw at him  Sold the Porsche and bought something faster (I only keep cars for 12 months anyway)
Interesting comments allround. The turbo times are great but I dont have one so anyone driving a regular 993 996 997 will be hard pushed to match modern large engined diesels!!! I am now seriously considering dropping the porka as the performance benefits over modern hot hatches has all but gone!!!
TBH its the way of the modern diesel. I have a 535d (remapped), and its not far off my c4s, factor in the massive amount of torque and if you are in the wrong gear in the porsche, it would be hard pressed to keep up!!! Until you get to jail type speeds :cop:
I went with a very good friend last week and he bought a 320D. I took it for a spin and I was impressed. Torque is around 340NM while my 997 C2 has 370NM. Yes I have more power but I am sure he will be quicker if I do not play with the gears. And we are talking about a small diesel....The Big boys are from a different planet... Theo
with out a doubt there are cars out there that are quicker off the line with particle emitting power units. Take the huge shift forward at lemans, petrol there is the lesser fuel. But on the twisty stuff and with clean underwear the 911 is a supreme drive and just the most amazing place to be. I take the point about straight line disappointment, but we will to some degree always be overtaken by progress. But I know where I would rather be, and what I would rather arrive in, peoples looks say it all it is beautiful. :thumb:
Last week I took my Porsche to work, ( 220 mile round trip) and I have to say that not for a second did I forget I was in a Porsche. That total feeling of being in something special, sunroof open, warm breeze, knocking it down to third to overtake middle lane hoggers. Leaving everyone behind during acceleration, looking with disdain at the pushy ***** in my mirror in their audis( don"t know why but I have a irrational dislike of all audis) .Yes totally galling if there is something you cant lose, but it happens so infrequently ( twice in 5k miles) that I just think oh I was in the wrong gear. If I had a TT it would be licence losing time for me :judge:
