Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello everybody. Every few years I almost pull the trigger on joining the fraternity. So far, I've been close but no cigar. Almost bought a very low mileage 996 five years ago, bought a new Hemi instead. Then I saw all the IMS issues and so forth. The itch is coming again. My situation is I have a station car. I leave a car at the train station just to drive back and forth to work and around town. I bought a old New Beetle, thinking when my son turned 16 I'd give it to him, but he didn't want it (kids these days!). Barreling through traffic I can imagine myself Over five days a week, it's about 5-6K miles per year. So I found an IMS thread here, and one person commented "Don't drive short distances." Well, since that might be what I do every day, I have to ask: What is a short distance? I would be drooling over a 996 with 60 to 95K miles which seem to be commonly available around here (southern California) at reasonable prices. I see a real nice 2002 Targa - I recall drooling over the original Targas, my friends dad had a '65 356C which made me highly aware of all models and designations at that time. Would maintenance items be similar to the NB? I've been through the, ahem, gold plated 60K and 80K service on it. Now trying to decide if I replace struts/tires and keep being a legend in my own mind, or going for the real legend. If anything having to do with German cars makes any sense.
