Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry if those are silly questions, but my new-to-me car came without any manuals or history and my expertise lies with older 911s... Does anyone have any idea what the items on the pictures circled in red might be ? They look stock but I think they are not ! Initially I hoped for a sort of Ipod setup, with what looked like volume **** and jack to plug it in... But the back window thing looks like a passport radar detector stuffed in a box... Could it be ? Is that back window thing standard ? The carpeting around that box looks similar but it really looks like the nose of my old radar detector ! If so, then maybe those other ***** might be related to remote activation and power, but nothing seems to work ! Clues welcome ! I'm growing more certain it's a detector as I type this !!! PS: just noticed a faint glow (red light) on the center "button" of the radio, could that be somehow related if it's a detector ? If not what's that, the car is off, the alarm is off !

POST 2Original post

none of that is factory equipment, the radio glows to tell theives thats its protected

POST 3Original post

Looks like an aftermarket toggle switch, amp gain switch, alarm LED and possibly a radar detector mounted in the rear... Car must have had a custom stereo and was returned to stock.

POST 4Original post

Did you check to see if the toggle switch control controls the rear wing?

POST 5Original post

I believe that is a custom aftermarket Valentine One install. There was a company that used to make a kit like this for Boxsters.

POST 6Original post

def looks like a custom V1 install, cause the **** on the front is from a V1. though i wonder why they'd mount the unit in the rear - you might wanna look up front or in the front grill for a second V1 unit mounted somewhere

POST 7Original post

Custom V1 setup. The **** should turn it on. Does your rear view mirror have arrows etched into it on either side? Or do you see a remote display above the steering wheel in the guage cluster. You have a $300+ Bonus with the V1 congrats!

POST 8Original post

more like $1000 considering if there are two V1 units, plus the remote display and then installation costs. new V1 units are 400 a piece

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hmm, a V1 ! That would be very cool, but it's not turning on, so who knows... I probably will have to trace this, or dismantle the "hidden" unit and plug it normally... I'll be looking for wires under the seats. I was thinking maybe the jack in the switch is power for a V1 power cable ? But no cable around !

POST 10Original post

I would say that the previous owner removed it hence it not working but I see the rear unit in place so I would assume it is still in place. You just might have to do some investigating.

POST 11Original post

looks pretty cool...... even though no one can trace what it is..... just play around with it and one day you might be going WARP SPEED........ Number One........Engage....

POST 12Original post

*Eeek* holes drilled and aftermarket fittings!!! Being the purist that I am, I would remove all those items immediately, and purchase new plastic covers to get rid of the holes. (but's thats just me :-) )

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, those mods are not too obtrusive, though I -will- remove the rear mounted detector this w/e. Even if I can make it work, this is a silly mounting location, completely obstructed in forward view by the sports seats and my head ! Besides, I have to admit I am a purist when it comes to old cars such as my 912, but for the 996, I'm not so bothered - in fact I am drooling about a GT3(RS) front bumper and 030 suspension kit ! Sorry Myrmidon ;-)
