Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello All, I drove in heavy rain last Sunday morning (M25/M23) and since then I've heard a slight whine on start up on two occasions. I've read elsewhere that it could be a wet pulley/belt ? I'm assuming that I don't hear the noise every time due to the fact that the belts/pulleys stop in different places when the engine stops runnings (I'm guessing here by the way :?: ). So far my recent drives have been short so I'll take the car for a decent run this weekend to heat things up !! Any thoughts appreciated Thanks

POST 2Original post

If it is squeal, it could be a slipping belt. If you hear an occasional whine at startup it could be the alternator. This is usually more evident when there is a heavy load e.g when lights/wipers/fan blower at high speeds are all on.

Thanks, I'll keep listening :thumb:

POST 4Original post

The design of the rear boot lid will allow water to seep into the engine compartment in heavy rain. This will result in the odd whine or squeal on startup akin to the noise associated with a slipping belt. You will also notice the voltmeter showing between 10 and 12 when normally it should be around the 14 mark. A couple of gentle blips on the throttle will cure it.

I'm sure (hoping !) that it was the rain last Sunday morning as it was tipping it down on the M25. I stayed in the inside and middle lanes and let the idiot drivers overtake me at speed. They must have been mad driving like that in that weather :nooo: I had a new battery fitted last Saturday so the power should be ok although I don't know what they lose power wise while sitting on the shelf ???
