Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

1999 Boxster with 94k, during an oil change today we cut open the oil filter and found a couple small metal shavings, but nothing too large or excessive. I had a pre-purchase inspection done at 92k and the specialist cut a filter open and told me it looked fine, but didn't mention what he found inside. My question is.. how much flakes/debris is normal in a dissection? Here are a couple pictures of my filter..

POST 2Original post

Nothing there to get worried about. A couple of small glittery bits are no cause of concern. All engines will shed a bit of metal over time, it's just something that you can't easily see with a metal bodied oil filter like most cars use.

POST 3Original post

Sleep well. Nothing to worry about. A couple of little flakes/sparklies is normal.

POST 4Original post

I used to freak out when I would discover extremely fine particles on my magnetic drain plug. My filter would be completely free of metal particles. My indie told me not to worry.............. TO
