Came across this page whilst trying to find out what the DME relay actually did and thought it sounded like a very cheap and effective preventative measure for your 996! Comments please. http://www.performance2and4.co.uk/relay_n.htm

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

DME relays were a common cause of non-starting on the 3.2/964/993, but it is very rare to hear of one going bad on a 996 (yet).
I had this problem on a 97 MKIII Golf GTi in 2005, it could be a similar part in 986/996 but I haven't heard of any going faulty either.
