I own a 1999 996 and want to add the factory CD changer. Is the car pre wired for this? Does my current unit control this. I have the single CD controller in my car.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I don't believe it is pre-wired, at least not completely. Yes the head unit can control it, at least on my '01 it does. (I had the dealer install a changer when I bought the car)
US cars are not prewired. Trivial, in the UK there is a CD changer prep option. The changer is a Becker 2660/Porsche CDC-3. Your radio should be the CDR-220 and the changer works with this radio.
So do I need to get a cable from the dealer.
Yes, or you could try becker: http://www.beckerautosound.com
