Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2002 996 C4 tiptronic. Just bought, seems to have a transmission whine? Been advised could be wheel bearings but noise seems to be more constant than what you would expect for this. Any such problems on this model?

POST 2Original post

Hello, Welcome to the forum. The gearboxes are pretty strong and we have not come across any problems like that.. its from the rear of the car ? Mike

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi & thank you. Id say that the noise is more from the front. I have had someone drive the car, a mechanic, who thuoght it could be possible transfer box or diff. He did however say that the easiest way of olimination & cheapest way would be to start with the wheel bearings? Thanks Andy.

POST 4Original post

Hi, We have had 4 diff failures in 6 years, and about 25 wheel bearings. Run it up on a ramp with the traction control switched off and see if you can hear anynoise with a stethoscope...sometimes they wont make any noise until they are loaded up. Mike
