Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know they are two very different cars, but my prior car was an 02 M3 Cab. I really miss having a convertible. Any advise for a potential first time porsche buyer? I'm looking at a Porsche dealer 03 C2 white/blk well equiped certified with 8k miles for $67k and an BMW dealer 04 C4 blk/gry similar equipment non-certified and miles for about the same price. Both cabs. This would be my daily driver. I know the service cost can be a little high although only done every 15k-20k miles.

POST 2Original post

If one is a CPO and the other is not and they are the same price I would go with CPO car 100 times out of 100. The only reason to think about the other one is it they will certify it and the price remains the same. That said the prices seem a bit hight to me. Are these 996's cabs or coupe? FYI - I bought a brand new 2004 with 24 miles on the clock that came with CPO even though it was not previously owned this past Dec for 62k. It is a coupe though so if you're looking at cabs then maybe the price is about right.

POST 4Original post

My advice? Make the swap!!! I traded my 2000 M5 for a 2004 996 and the only thing I regret is not making the swap years ago.

POST 5Original post

Is it possible to keep both? For a daily driver, I would choose the M5. But for a weekend cruiser, the cab will be nice. Also, how much are 02-03 C4S cabs going for these days? Have you looked into that?

POST 6Original post

I know the subject says "M5", but his post says M3 and I don't recall there being a convertible M5 in the most recent generation.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm answering a couple of post combined. I had a 02 M3 and traded it for an 03 M5. I regret getting rid of the convertible. I'm thinking I'll get the new V8 M3 convertible when it comes out, but that's still a couple/few years away. I can't swing keeping the M5 and getting the 996 cab, but that would be nice. I'd love a C4S cab, but boy they are expensive. I found a 04 Seal Grey with 8k miles and they want $86k and it's not certified. I'm not sure how much a 02/03 C4S cab would go for, but there aren't a lot of them out there.

POST 8Original post

86k is pricey for non-CPO car! Looking back at my previous post, I don't think the C4S had a cab in 02, maybe in 03. I assume you want a c2/c4 cab from 02+? Cause 99-01 cabs are going for very reasonable prices and you can get CPO. Plus, if you go that route you will have change to modify (if that floats your boat) or maybe have the option to keep your M.

POST 9Original post

hell a brand new one is not much more than that isnt it?

POST 10Original post

I sold my modded '00 M5 and bought a '02 C2 cab (in the process of being modded) last fall. I've always wanted a convertible and I'm very happy with the Porsche. If it's a convertible you're after then I deffinately would go with a Porsche. I was considering an M3 cab but once I drove the P car it was no brainer for me. Having said all that, I do miss my M5. I've been watching the e39 M5 market and prices are very soft so I'm considering buying one this fall and having the best of both worlds. Good luck with the purchase. Cheers, Stan
