POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm in the market for a 997 turbo cab. Are there any must have options/ anything i should look out for? Any advice welcomed.

POST 3Original post

Sports chrono is a must and for a cab heated seats are nice. Late gen 1 with pcm3 is a very good idea if you don't go for a gen 2 car. Other than that the turbo is pretty well equipped in standard trim as it is top of the range and only missing cruise control could also be annoying. Personally, having had a cab and coupe turbo I think of you want a turbo due to serious performance and all weather grip, stick with a coupe. If you love cabs for involvement, I would go for N/A CS or CGTS which will sound miles better and be more fun than a turbo most of the time.

POST 4Original post

Do a search - must have options been debated before Also confirm if you are looking at gen 1 or 2. on my gen 1 coupe I had to have sports chrono and adaptive sports seats, also glad it came with heated seats and cruise, and without the rear wiper which ruins the lines Edited by Adam B on Friday 29th August 09:29

I had a 996 c4s cab and preferred it to the turbo. However, the reliability issues of the na 997s mean that I don't want the cost and hassle and are forcing me down the turbo route. I am now also considering a 996 turbo s cab (again for reliability reasons). I figure that exclusivity should mean better residules on it?

I haven't worked it out to the day but I must have collectively 18 years of first hand motoring experience across eight 986 and 987 and 997 cars (excluding the turbos I have owned), via me, friends and family with not one bore scoring or IMS failure. There has been one RMS replacement (on my car) which is an overplayed small oil leak that you fix when you change the clutch or straight away if you have a warranty, total cost £1000 so no big deal. If you go for post 2006 997 the likelihood of IMS problems is very low IMHO. In saying that 996 turbo s is a great car but personally 997 interior is so much nicer I would go in that direction if funds allow. Turbo S could however be a future classic (like I'm hoping my GTS will be;)) FYI I have owned 987.1s 997.1s, 997.14S cab, 997.1tt, 997.1tt cab, 997.2 GTS so have some real life broad experience

POST 7Original post

Another important check is that if it is second hand that the cab still has it's rear wind deflector. It should have. It makes a serious difference to the noise and wind when it's up.

You have had 3 cars with the infamous m96/97 engine and they have been fine? How new were they and how many miles did you cover? These engines are now between 7 and 17 years old and I can assure you that the fundamental design issues are very real. Any buyer needs to go in with their eyes wide open. All engines fail eventually, but these WILL let you down eventually.

POST 9Original post

My m96 and m97 engines that I know about have had between 12 and 60k miles. My experience coveres a larger pool than the three I have owned myself, below is a list of other cars who's owners I have day to day contact with and know what issues they have faced (and none have been catastropic). Owner 1 current car M96 for 5 years Owner 2 current car M96 for 3 years Owner 3 current car M96 for 4 years Owner 4 current car M97 for 2 years, previous cars M96 and M97 Owner 5 current car 997.2 but previos 2xM97s (admitedly all of these were low mileage cars owned from new or nearly new) I am not suggesting for a second that the above is statistically significant by the way!!! Yes all engines have issues and m96 more so than its fair share. The poster was looking at a m97 and I recommended post 2006 to minimise the risks. Still think Internet forums have a skewed representation with negative stories. It's as if every 997.1 out there (of which there are many) it literally about to explode! If Chris355 is that worried but really wants an M97 engined car, buy the car he really wants and budget £2k for a good pre purchase cylinder inspection and an upgraded IMS bearing. I also said that 996 turbo s is a good buy and yes, engine is bullet proof if it has been cared for (warmed before spirited driving and well serviced). However an old thrashed turbo is no better reliability wise than a well cared for m97 purchased in the right way IMHO. If I am wrong then apologies to all of you m97 drivers who are about to crash and burn! Edited by c4sman on Monday 1st September 08:42 Edited by c4sman on Monday 1st September 09:10

What would be the value of a 996 turbo cab v a 996 turbo s cab. Both 05, manual with say 50k miles. Everything else being equal.
