Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Chaps, I've got a 996 1998 C2, and was wondering if you experience what I experience ! From cold, I find the gearbox entry into 2nd gear isn't smooth as the other gears. It doesn't crunch, it just takes a tiny bit more effort to slot it in (oooh errr). After about 5 mins driving the gearbox is all smooth - I guess as the oil warms up. Is this a sign of impending trouble or is this just a normal for a manual 996? Cheers

POST 2Original post

Classed as normal. New oil is required at 83k I believe.Various grades are available. The oil is like glue and needs a good mix up before the box runs nicely. Everthing should feel smooth after a short run and temp. reaches 80 plus. Try some sub zero temps. to get a real feel of the issue. As pointed out this only first to second gear.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers chap - its exactly that, stiff when cold and ultra smooth when warmed up - only going from 1st to 2nd. It's a shame there is nothing that can be done to make it smooth from the outset irrespective of temp.

POST 6Original post

Very common....I have the same symptoms, and I know of several others who experience the same.

POST 8Original post

mine too. exactly the same first to second only when cold. Fine after 5 mins driving. Very common and nothing to worry about.
