Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hello, I recently bought a 2007 Cayman S that I drove 1300 miles home. My first drive out after getting home the rear driver's side axle completely disconnected from the diff 4 bolts just fell out and 2 snapped off. So far I have got the old axle out, retrieved 2 snapped bolts out of the flange and retapped the threads. I sourced a "new" axle from a part out on marketplace as well as purchasing all new hardware from the dealership, but now that I'm reassembling things it seems like my old axle had a lot of in and out play on both ends where as this new axle has 0. Is there something wrong with the axle that I got or was my old axle just so worn out that it developed such play? Looking forward to your responses. Thanks

POST 2Original post

my old axle just so worn out that it developed such play? Given that it physically came apart I'd suspect this

POST 3Original post

It's not like to axle snapped in half or anything, it seems like someone just didn't properly torque the bolts when working on it before hand. It just seems like this new axle doesn't have any flexibility at the joints.

POST 4Original post

I most definitely should have some in/out play to accommodate for the suspension movement. It is likely that your "new" axles CVs are still packed with grease and thus difficult to make move in/out with just arm strength. Your old axle might have leaked out some grease (any evidence of that?). As long as you can flex the joint then you should be fine. Cheers, Julian

POST 5Original post

I took it back out and it is moving freely now, but the new axle is clearly 2 inches longer than the old one. Do you think that it's like you mentioned about not being able to be stretched out? The old axle has both boots ripped, it absolutely leaked out grease haha.

POST 6Original post

Are you positive it's the correct axle? I'm not sure about 987 (I've repacked my axles, but didn't really pay attention), but 986 axles are different length's left and right......... -Eric 09 987.2 CS 99 986

POST 7Original post

Alright, I stripped down both the axles and it revealed that they definitely are not the same. The guy I bought it from must have done something wrong with the info I gave him. The axle that he gave me was just under 2 inches LONGER than the axle I had on. I ended up being able to swap over some components and save the old axle with parts from the new one. The Axle that he had sent me had the correct part number on it, but it definitely was not right. Thanks for everyone's help.
