Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hey gang. I did a pretty thorough search on Planet-9 and elsewhere and didn't really find an answer to this question. If you know of a thread that already answers this, please let me know. I've damaged the front of my CDR-24 unit. Don't ask how - long story. I'm not interested in ripping out the whole system, so don't go there What I would like to do is either swap in a used CDR-24, or transplate the faceplate off a used CDR-24. What I've read is that transplant might be expensive to have the dealer (or third party) program the radio to work with my car. Maybe that's not true? So question 1: How difficult/expensive is it to connect a used CDR-24? Question 2: Is it possible, without much risk of damage, to transplate the front/faceplate from one unit to another?

POST 2Original post

There is a thread stuck to the top of the 987 Cayman and Boxster Electronics forum that will go into the replacement of a CDR-24 unit. I have a CDR-24 w/ Bose (and new knobs) sitting in my attic. It could be had at a reasonable price.

POST 3Original post

It's easy enough to remove the whole head unit (articles in our Articles section will show you step by step for that), once you have it out, it is pretty easy to get the faceplate off, assuming you have another faceplate to put on, not sure if Porsche will sell you just he faceplate, might have to get one from a salvage yard or someone who pulled out their original radio and no longer wants/needs it.

POST 4Original post

Thanks guys. I have a line on an inexpensive unit so I think I'll do the faceplate transplant. I've pulled my CDR-24 out before (actually several times - including installing an ICE iPod connection) so I'm quite familiar with that part. I just wasn't sure on the other details.

POST 5Original post

Ok. Not seeing an obvious way to remove the faceplate and I'm afraid to break something. Has anyone removed the faceplate on a CDR-24?

POST 7Original post

K-Man: Any advice in removing the faceplate? Sounds like you've done this before? I've pulled the radio out of the console several times, so that part is easy to me. I don't want to break any tabs or damage the LCD.

Sounds like a bit of a hassle to do this...and why? to keep it stock? The CDR 24 is a real low end piece of electronics, IMO I replaced mine with a new HU with nav, amp, BU camera, Bluetooth, DVD etc. for under $750 in parts and did the install myself. Still have the old CDR 24 that was working perfectly when I removed it 6 months ago
