Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Mine was slipping in higher gears a few weeks ago, since then, it has been fine... until this morning. It is slipping when the turbo kicks in, 4th gear onwards. That aside, the boost gauge on the digital display went up to 1.3 and, once, 1.4 (car is an X50 and, as far as I know, a standard one). My questions are: 1) Is it possible that a slipping clutch can, as it seems to have done, come and then simply go away? Would this indicate that it is, in fact, not the clutch on its way out (or am I trying to kid myself I won't have to spend big bucks)? If it helps, the pedal has felt and sounded rather squeaky at times of late... 2) Whilst I have searched on here and PH, can anyone tell me where they had their clutch replaced and an approximate price? Porsche told me last week that the Indys might have cheaper labour rates but they then hike up the price saying it needs other bits. Sales talk, perhaps, but I want a good price for good work. 3) Finally, a trusted friend of mine is a mechanic who has a garage business and all the gear etc. and has worked on some good cars before. Would you advise me sourcing the parts and having him fit it? If so, where is the best place to get a clutch (tried Euro car parts but says out of stock on the site) and how long, approximately, does it take to do the job? Is any specialist, in-the-know, Porsche knowledge required or will a good mechanic do? Thanks

POST 4Original post

Hello there, First of all it sounds like your clutch is the cause of the problems, they can last a while but depending on driving conditions can be known to go at 20 - 30k miles. I had mine done by a very reputable indy and i believe that thats the way forward for yourself, just post a question asking for a good local indy? remember to put where you are and im sure you will get a good response. A decent mechanic could do it but for the hassle free life id stick with the above, a clutch kit can be found from the below site http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/porsche_996_transmission_gearbox.html your looking at probs another 5 or 6 hundred quid in labour and if your flywheel is out of limits then you have that to do aswell, and the rear main seal aswell while your at it!!!! id be budgeting about £1000 to £1300 Hope this is of use to you. JC

Sorry for the late reply. Cheers JC, now booked in to Mike at Sports and Classic over in Knutsford. Have heard only good things about them.
