Based on what I've read in numerous posts on this forum (since I've never had the chance to hear for myself) it seems people agree that an Oettle style modded exhaust and a PSE sound quite similar. Or have I completely misunderstood? So apart from being original and switchable what is the upside of a PSE? I ask because I have recently been offered a second hand PSE, but as it still comes out significantly more expensive than a mod I am no longer convinced that I want one. Biggest selling point to me (if sound is really v similar) is the switch. And is that really worth £1k+? What do you guys think?

The switch is worth about £15, it's the labour fitting it which makes it so expensive.
Cheers, what I meant though was that if there is no real difference in sound between the Oettle style and the PSE than being able to get a switch on the PSE then I'll essentially pay £1k more for the switch (second hand PSE incl. switch at c. £1600 vs. mod at c. £400). Really just curious if anyone has heard the difference/ tried the two alternatives and would say it's definitely worth while to spend the extra cash on the PSE?
Personally, and I speak as someone who has their car booked in for an Oettle-style mod in 2 weeks, if I was offered an original PSE at £1600 fitted (you don't say if it's just for parts or parts and labour) I'd definitely go down that route as IMO 'original is best' and it'll be more desirable come re-sale time. Also, not sure what the difference will be in terms of insurance as the PSE is optional extra OEM equipment vs a clear mod for the Oettle bypass :dont know:
In reality, to have a switchable PSE system, it involves a few more components than a dash mounted switch! And alot of labour to boot. The muffler by-pass valves are vacuum operated, and vacuum is stored in an accumulator vessel, switched electrically to each actuator. The system also takes into account road speed and overides the "loud" mode at road speeds between 30 & 50 mph approx. Ironically, most people by-pass this facility and have it on loud all the time! The mufflers have substantial bypass circuits and actuators. The photos are the original Eisenmann mufflers fitted to my C4S. I admit they're alot of money, but it is quality kit. You don't often see them for sale second hand as most folk want to keep hold of them..... I also agree that the Oettle type mod does make a vast improvement to the exhaust note. Just my two-penneth!
:thumb: it sounds just bloody perfect at between 3 and 4 thousand revs, 2nd gear through the 30mph range....mmmm yum!!
You guys are making a pretty convincing case... Would be a bit of a turn-off though if it switched off between 30 and 50. So the bypass you mentioned is that to bypass the switch entirely or just to avoid the switching on and off all the time? And how does one do that?
Hi I had a PSE retro fitted and i have to say it is perfect, the switch is a cool thing and really makes it innovative. i would go with original in this case and suck it up. i had mine fitted at RSJ and they simply left out the pin that operates the cut out so it is either nuclear loud or no which is fine. what is great is those long moorway journeys are quiet and calm and then the town trips or country road experience is something all together. i have just been to the alps and i loved the roar through the mountains was awesome. only my opinion and i can not comment on MODS as i have not done any i have tried to keep the car original. personaly i do not think the PSE will become any cheaper now either in fact maybe it will rise even more as it becomes more desirable? good luck
Being a relative newcomer to the wonderful world of P ownership I have to say a PSE was top of my list of extras once I'd found the car of my dreams. I've also had the mod done for getting rid of the cut out between 30 & 45 mph and the sounds are truely awsome so I can get quiet when I have to leave home early doors and on long motorway cruises with the switch on BUT the PSE is off all other times and I'm driving around with a big grin I can't comment on the after market mods on offer out there but I'd pay the £1,600 you've been offered...... not sure about £3,000 plus for a new one though :?
henr!c the by-pass mod simply takes out the speed related operation. So that it's on loud from stand still through to max speed, no quiet zone between 30 & 45mph. The mod itself is documented on this forum. It's only a case of either removing a link or adding a wire link to the relay - that's the top and bottom of it! The switch still controls the toggle between loud and quiet mode - whether you're stood still or on the move. It's a nice touch, honest..... :thumb:
The mrs is going to hate me (hopefully not for too long) but you sold it too well. I'm going for it. Hoping to get it in before the bank holiday weekend so I can give it a proper roadtrip welcome to the family when we go to the countryside (I'll throw in a bit of :flowers: and that should cheer her up). Thanks for all the good advice. I'll report back when I've got it in. Henrik
Just got the car back... :driving: .... .... .... .... :yahoo: ....speechless
Good move ... Gurgle gurgle! :drive:
Indeed... I just love that gurgly noise you can get when the engine comes under gentle load at low revs when pulling away/shunting about in a car park. On the other hand, the sound of it coming on-cam at 3-5k in 2nd when giving it the beans is something else all together!
Do you get any pops with either the PSE or the Oettle mod?
