Hi All, Fantastic forum you have here. A real goldmine of information. I have owned Impreza's for the past 10 years however have always hankered after a 911 and am just about ready to take the plunge. I have a budget of around 15k which I appreciate is low but I am hopeful I can pick up a late 90's possibly 2000, 996 C2. Mileage for that budget seems to be around 75- 100k with FSH. I have seen a couple now and wonder if someone can clear up some conflicting information I have been given please? I was advised to "walk away" from any 996 that has sludge in and around the oil cap as this would suggest that water is getting into the oil. Could someone clarify if this is true as both cars I have seen have had a yellowish sludge in and around the cap. The last was an old boy who had the car from new and with a FPSH. So basically I dont want to turn down what could be a good example on the basis of the "oil cap sludge"!! Thanks in advance for any help or guidance.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

"Mayo" in the oil cap and filler tube is very common and nothing to worry about. It is caused by water droplets and oil mist condensing in the long filler tube, and is worse in cold weather and after shorter runs. Just watch for oil in the water header tank, or water in the oil. Yeah, nothing to really worry about. From what I've read (when I first spotted it in my car) was that it commonly occurs if the car has been used on a lot of short runs and hasn't got warm enough to 'burn off' the little bit of water in there. It gathers at the top near the cap because it's the coolest point.

Thanks for the replies. Especially the checklist. That is exactly what I was looking for. Went to see another today. Ticked all the right boxes and I started to get excited...then I looked through the paperwork and saw it has had a new bumper and new offside wing. The work was completed by Porsche UK so not sure if that is a deal breaker or not? Could have been very minor but was enough to put me off! The other thing wrong with it that I could see was a crack on the underside of the offside exhaust box. Again, not really sure if this is going to be part and parcel of looking at 996's for £15k.... Cheers.
Welcome. Like you I found this forum very helpful. Just take your time the right one will be along shortly.
