Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

was talking to a car dealer about part exing my 996 C2 for a turbo. It is a 2000 car with 70K miles and he offered me £13K for it as a 'good price', I know these guys are out to make money but 'tip of the day' don't make the punter think they are a total mug :judge: Personally I'm happy to keep my car rather than be had over barrel and see the car sold on with a nice mark-up.

POST 2Original post

They are the same the world over - they offered 9000 chfs for my wifes C class estate last - "maybe". Told them to shove it and we easily sold it privately (1st person that called) for 16500 chfs.....

Here we go again - only businesses not allowed to make a profit are car dealers    FWIW, that sounds like a fair price to me - in the Trade... If you are not willing to allow a dealer to make a profit on it, why did you offer it as p/x to start with? Would it be anything to do with the ease and convenience of the transaction? The protection from fraud, theft, car-jacking when selling privately? Was it the cost and cash-flow benefits of not having to advertise it and wait for the right punter to come along, if at all? Or perhaps the fear of come-backs or retribution from a disappointed private buyer when things went wrong? None of which you are prepared to pay for, of course... :hand: Finally, if you are so anti a dealer making money - why were you looking at a Turbo from a dealer in the first place? Was it because it will have been prepared for sale with decent tyres, up to date service records and a warranty - on top of your legal rights under the Sale of Goods Act, etc...? Funny how you're prepared to pay for all that on someone else's p/x, but not your own? :dont know:

Here comes Wattie - the patron saint of the sheepskin jacket brigade........ From my point of view - im more than happy for the dealer to make a profit - lets face it he's making a profit on the car he's selling you - agreed? Why should he make a profit on the car i'm selling him? Thats just greedy. :hand: From my experience with the Merc - the car didnt need anything doing to it - the private buyer was delighted and took a 6 hour return train journey just to come and view it and another 3 hour train journey to pick it up and we havnt heard from him since - therefore i can only deduce that the dealer offered a low price in the name of greed and the hope that we would be mug enough to accept it. He wouldnt have done a thing to it and knocked it out for probably more than we got for it privately. Meanwhile i have only one further question - Wattie are you Boycie in real life? - i've heard that you sound like him........

   Funny that... Wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that more car purchases take place per day than any other single product costing more than a couple of hundred quid? Or because it is the only purchase (other than a house) that most of us will ever make where the price is expected to be negotiable? Or because it is the only business that is expected to take your abused old heap off of you in part-exchange? If you want to talk about dishonesty in the sale of cars, I can tell you a few stories of really serious dishonesty - on the behalf of customers part-exchanging cars: You ask any dealer how many p/x cars have serious hidden faults that mysteriously cause problems the day after they were somehow coaxed onto the dealer's premises... Or found to be owing £20,000 on finance on a previous registration, or with one of these stolen V5s, etc... I know you are only being your usual antagonistic self, but I'd like to hear your alternative plans for the distribution of new cars without dealers? £100,000 car bought unseen from those ever-so knowledgable sales staff, and ever-so careful delivery drivers, at Tesco online anybody?

POST 8Original post

I had a similar experience with a 996 Turbo when the OPC offered me £24,000 on p/x and when I said I had already been offered £34,000 on p/x by another dealer the reply was "we will match it" ... where did the extra £10,000 appear from?

"Or because it is the only business that is expected to take your abused old heap off of you in part-exchange? " Did you not trade your Range Rover Sport then Wattie?

POST 11Original post

Yeah - I used to work for a dealer like that... Went broke 20 years ago :hand: No, it's not... Your old car is called 'stock' in the trade... Why should a dealer pay more for stock from you than he would from an auction or bought privately? Especially as he is offering you the benefit of not having to prepare the car for sale, advertise it, deal with the low-life and tyre-kickers that pretend they want to buy it, but really want to case your joint for future nefarious purposes! Of course he would have sold it for more than you did, but then he would have had to fix any problems that arose in the first 3 months - by law! He would also have had to stock it (tying up capital), advertise it, maintain it and 'do a deal' when he sold it. Warren, we've never met, but I always thought you were a decent bloke... This is pathetic school playground insult-trading... grow up

Yes... and I told the dealer it had been abused, needed new tyres all round, needed a service, had a couple of minor scratches (which I pointed out) and two kerbed wheels. All that is a lot of the reason why I p/xed it rather than sell privately - it would have cost me more to fix all that, advertise it, settle the finance and sell it myself. And even when I had, (and assuming I hadn't been knocked on the head or been defrauded) I would have missed out on the particular car I wanted to buy. The funny thing I've discovered in life is that people tend to live up to your expectations of them: I've bought lots of cars outside of my job and always from a dealer. I have always felt I was treated honestly and fairly . Ever heard of the expression "You reap what you sow..." :hand:
