Car magazine (Aug 2015 issue) has an insider report regarding the gen 2 models. It has all the usual discussion regarding the switch to turbo 4 cylinder engines and minor body mods. They also speculate that Cayman pricing will under cut the Boxster! There could also be a name change to '718' to bring the range in line with the '911' and '918'. If the speculation is correct and the Gen 2 Cayman undercuts the Boxster how will that affect residual values of gen 1 six cylinder Caymans vs Boxsters?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Boxster pricing has been converging with the Cayman for a couple of years now, only a couple of hundred quid in it right now. I suspect we will see a price rise on both; just a bit less on the Cayman.
A price drop for the Cayman would make sense, the Boxster/Cayman is the only car I can think of where the coupe is more expensive than the cabriolet. I personally expect the 981.2 to be slightly cheaper than the 981.1 because Porsche is trying to sell more cars and they'll have a hard time marketing the 4-cylinder over a 6-cylinder without a minor price reduction.
Did the article contribute any new info? All I've heard so far is minor styling tweaks, 4cyl turbo and upgraded ICE.

It speculates 2.0l 250bhp engine for the base models, 2.5l 300bhp for S spec and 370bhp for the GTS. With future GT4 models sticking with 6 cylinders. Minor tweaks to the lights and bumpers and a general weight reduction. No mention of any changes to the infotainment system but the car needs it, for me it's the one area of the car that really disappoints. My 2010 BMW 3 Series has a better system than my 981 Cayman S has.

My 2010 BMW 3 Series has a better system than my 981 Cayman S has. I'd be a bit surprised if the base model has less power than the current one. They know they are going to get stick for going turbo 4 and their only counter can be it has more power, more torque, better economy. Except they can't say that if it has less power. I know the extra torque may well make it's real-world performance greater that the current one 90% of the time, it would still be losing bar bragging rights to the outgoing 6. The 70bhp difference between the S seems rather large too. But we shall see.

anonymous said: [redacted] I don't think talk of 981.2 should be allowed on Porsche forums It can not be called a real Porsche without a flat 6, Trading Standards need to look at this under the trade descriptions act I'm looking forward to my Porsche Boxster 981 2.7 NA Flat 6 doubling in price

Looks like some people are already trying to cash in on this.
I think it will be around the same price as the out going versions, but will have fitted as standard Mobile phone prep and dab radio about £770 of kit at todays prices.
anonymous said: [redacted] I see! I am quite open minded about this whole 4 cylinder turbo thing....will wait and see what I think after I've had a loaner for a day. My 2.7 981 will have around 90,000 miles within 2 years time, so I will be having to make a move around that time!! Perhaps I should replace it with a 986 2.5 ??!! ;-)

Having had 2 Subaru turbos I'm sure that it need not be ALL bad (and the best bits could really be quite good). Indeed combine the top end rush and characterful noise of the early 2.0s and the bottom end of the 2.5 and you could have a genuinely charismatic engine. I await apoplexy from moose and ord.

If the rumoured numbers are true then the Cayman S could very well end up with 380 PS and the same or more torque than the outgoing 3.8L. Could be a really exciting engine, even though it will assault your ears and have rubberband like throttle response and eats little kittens, etc.
EricE said: eats little kittens, etc. Well that is a USP, and if Breaking boundaries is, as has been said, a defining characteristic of a "Classic", it might well qualify.
MysticMoose said: It'll provide a lot of shove. But it will be precisely the opposite of exciting. Apparently Porsche's previous 4-pot turbo in the 944 was quite well regarded.
anonymous said: [redacted] Looking at the prices and some of the links you and some others have posted recently, I've been tempted to pick one up ......they are just so cheap...it's hard to resist!! But I am not a fan of running two cars...tried it once and whatever car I was in, I wanted to be in the other!
Ozzie Osmond said: MysticMoose said: It'll provide a lot of shove. But it will be precisely the opposite of exciting. Apparently Porsche's previous 4-pot turbo in the 944 was quite well regarded. Ha...exactly...nobody knows....so I shall just relax and see what they build without any preconceived opinions.
anonymous said: [redacted] To be delusional is a belief held with strong conviction despite superior evidence to the contrary. Many thanks for your superior evidence! I love my 2.7 with it's revvy engine and hate generic 'turbo diesel' like power delivery.....but Porsche do seem to know what they are doing when it comes to building cars that I like....so I will remain open minded...and if that makes me worthy, mature and delusional, I will take your kind comments as a compliment!! Cheers :-)

A 944 with a six would have been much more special IMO. The 944 turbo engine is pretty good for an early 4 pot turbo, but the noise is very disappointing. I prefer the 3.0 16V, n/a is better, but it's still a 4, so not tuneful. Compare the E36 M3 motor for example, or any Porsche 6 cyl.

But all this talk is about IL 4s not flat ones which (to my ears at least) generally sound a lot more interesting.
anonymous said: [redacted] I agree with this, but would still want a drive in the thing to confirm my worst fears, however I am sure that Porsche will try their best to make a silk purse out of a sows ear !
anonymous said: [redacted] Moosey, if you were around when Porsche went from the 356 to 911, or long-hood to IB, or IB to 964, or 964 to 993, or 993 to 996 etc. you'll know that Porsche forumistas like nothing more than to proclaim the superiority of an older car over the latest one. SS7

By contrast Mr D on the 2.7 PDK thread is extolling the virtues of a Fiesta ST3 (an IL4 turbo!) over a the "boring" 2.7 981. You can't please all of the people all of the time....
Yes a man of many contradictions
They'll have to pry the keys to my F6 GTS from my cold dead fingers.
koorby said: They'll have to pry the keys to my F6 GTS from my cold dead fingers. Good man. OPC salesman today said 'I am not that surprised' today when I said I had no interest at all in the 991.2 so would have to get a nearly new 991 instead. I get the impression that (of the small percentage of people with any idea about cars), the facelift of this generation of Porsches is seen as a huge step into mediocrity for the brand.
