Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, New to all this folks, and would appreciate if anyone has any ideas why my 996 would start making a 'chirping' noise (no bird jokes please!). Its a '98 996 non-turbo, with 77k, and started making the noise last week, only when warmed up, and only when under load between 1100 - 2100rpm. Steadily became worse and is now audible when idling with the engine cold. Noise is coming from the engine / exhaust area, Cheers, Andrew

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers, - You think it best to replace it?

POST 4Original post

Polybelt could be slipping although this is usually heard more when cold rather than warm. Or could be a failing waterpump ?

POST 5Original post

Had a strange chirping / turbo type noise on my old mk1 mx5, turned out to be a small hole in the exhaust at a joint where the gasket was failing.. really simple fi once i'd located it. It gradually got worse until i worked out what it was and where it was coming from !!

POST 6Original post

My car has just gone to OPC Byfleet as I heard the same noise in the cockpit. On mine they have diagnosed a problem with the power steering pump as making the noise.

POST 7Original post

possible "pinking"- incorrect ignition timing/advance or incorrect grade of fuel? When you drive the car and press the accelerator does the noise become more pronounced?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, it definitely sounds worse when the accelerator is pressed

POST 9Original post

Could be a loose spark plug. More common than you would think, and it makes the chirping sound you describe.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Bingo Richard!! tfft - thought I was going to have to sell the wife, but it was just a loose plug. I'll keep her till it needs a major service!
