I recall in an interview circa 3 years ago with Porsche President Wiedeking, that he dropped the idea to enter the Formula One circus because the cost to win is equivalent to that of developing a new model line. At the time he was referring to the Cayanne. Now that they have 4 product lines (2 of which are similar (boxster and cayman) have mastered the art of outsourcing production successfully, commited to a 5 line (Panamera), and rumored to a smaller Cayanne (with Audi Q5 assistance) its time for them to commit to Formula One. No need to bother with Le Mans since attendance is dismall at best. I say this because with all the brand exposure they will get by an increase in sales, they can capitalize on merchandizing as Ferrari does. But all of the observations above are irrelevant. Irrelevant for one reason. Porsche does not seem to have any problems selling themselves. Given the recent investment into VW and the monthly rumor that VW wants to enter F1, Porsche should go through with it. For one reason. Pay back the motorsport world with their presense after all the profits that were made with the Cayanne. Many people critisize Porsche for building an SUV. Whatever your opinion is on the Cayanne, Porsche's profits on the car have built them a nice nest egg. A nest egg to develop 2-3 more models and please oh please ENTER FORMULA 1.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

considering that Porsche was very profitable lately tells me that too.
speedgod, I don't know what you mean by dismal attendance but I was at LeMans in 2002 part of the Kevin Buckler TRG winning team and there were hundreds of thousands of people there, it was a complete mess from an organizational standpoint, but still cool nonetheless. Let me see if I can dig out a few pics...
K- Man S, I agree- I think Lemans racing can be even more exciting to watch than f1 even. I just mean in terms of making money on merchandising, F1 can be very profitable and can help sell cars.
Formula 1 is the ultimate systemtest. I wish that all the major car makers participated. It has made Honda a better company and would be great for Porsche as well. The problem with Formula 1 like the Olympics is the power politics in place. This is the main reason many companies choose to stay out. Mike
agreed. the politics are ridiculous. hopefully now it will be better than the last couple of years.
