Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Friday I did the "Unlimited Laps" DE at Laguna Seca. They did an excellent job, and the track was MORE exciting than I thought it would be. The numerous elevation changes and blind situations are very challenging, scary at times. The scariest, and most fun, part of the track is turn 1, entering turn 2. Its the fastest part of the track (115 MPH for me), and its a slight uphill climb that drops off right as it turns slightly to the left. The combination of the blind crest of the hill and the slight turn unsettles the car a little bit, but it feels like a lot at that speed. It doesn't help that the hot pit and track entrance is right here too. Also, the approach to the 2nd gear turn 2 is coming fast, and with the car feeling unsettled you don't think there's any way you'll get it slowed down in time. All of these factors at once result in never leaving your foot in it as long as you could, and approaching turn 2 slower than you need to (at least in a 996). Laguna is known to be hard on brakes. After my first two sessions, my "brake wear" dash light came on. I could see plenty of pad left on all four, so that didn't worry me too much. After another session, I could hear a scraping noise when driving through the pits. I was told it was a dust cover hitting the rotors, which made sense. This noise would stop when the brakes got hot. Later, before the drive home, I found that this was coming from both rear brakes. I also noticed that there are four tabs that stick out beyond the rotors, which I pushed in to slightly bend the thin sheet metal away from the rotors, fixing the scraping noise. Was this the right thing to do? I'm guessing that the heat warped these covers, is that right?

Not sure if it has anything to do with the dust shields, warped rotors, or pads but it certainly seems brake related. I also get the shimmies in the steering wheel when I get on the brakes hard. Seems that I need to get the cash together to purchase new front rotors, new pads, brake fluid, and maybe stainless brake lines. Sounds like Laguna is a fun course. It is on my list of tracks that I have to run, but I am logisticaly, geographicaly, and chronologicaly challenged. One day perhaps.
