Not content with designing one of the worst rear ends in 911 history in the 991 turbo, Porsche had a good chance to redeem themselves with the £5k aerokit turbo option. A chance to re-model the look of the car a little at the rear and make it more distinctive from the Carrera at he front. The 996 and 997 Turbo aerokits were good for this (the 996 one especially so), with that in mind I wonder what the design team were smoking when they penned this travesty: I am sure the non symmetrical wingtips work great but does the way it look not mean anything anymore? Its hard to believe that the same company can design the 918 Spyder and 991 GT3 rear ends and yet come up with this for their flagship road 911.

POST 2Original post

White one looks like a toy car or at best a ghastly aftermarket 'project KHan' or somesuch creation. '#nastyhalfordsfrontsplitter'

POST 3Original post

how to make your turbo looks awesome. A little lesson in history for todays designers

POST 5Original post

Porsche are really lazy when it comes to design for the turbo. Gemballa or Techart came up with the double side vent look for the 996 turbo and Porsche decided to copy it for their 997 turbo. The 997 turbo is ageing well though. It looks better today than when it first came out IMO. Ruf came up with flat rear spoiler and design for lower side vents on their 997 and 991 turbo Rufs and Porsche blatantly copied them on their 991 turbo. On the lower bumper vent its basically the same larger Ruf design with a tick across it. I've had both 991 turbo and 997 turbo parked up in my drive and whilst the new car has much more road presence due mainly to its larger size and those huge rear hips but overall I think the 997 is a better design IMO. It looks like a 993 which can't be bad. You should see the new OEM aerokit on the cooking 991s. The rear spoiler looks so out of place and aftermarket halfords its not funny.

POST 6Original post

Does remind me of Gemballa and have to say I like it. Seeing a fair few now in town.

POST 7Original post

Techart i believe were first to come out with twin side vent look - Porsche borrowed that look for the 997 Ruf had the flat deck rear spoiler on the RT12 - and Porsche duly borrowed that design for the 991 turbo On the RT 35 Ruf designed a wider lower bumper vent and again Porsche basically aped this design and put a tick across. You'd think they could come up with their own design ideas.

With the exception of the green Ruf and silver 996 Turbo all the cars in this thread look a bit minging.

The 964 3.6 Turbo was the peak for me. In terms of looks, its been downhill since. The 991 looks flabby and the wheels are a horrid design and just too big. It looks like an offroad style car. Theres no doubting its incredible ability of course.

POST 13Original post

Quite like my old 930, as a picture car and parked up at a show, albeit on the road due to its size it never had much road presence for my liking but looks are subjective thing. Best looking Porsche for me these days is the 991 GT3 looks just right

POST 15Original post

Not sure any of the aero kit's improved the looks of the 911T's. When I looked for my 996 I was avoiding the aero kit cars, the front spoiler is too prominent and far lower than the side skirts so looks out of place or aftermarket and the rear spoiler does absolutely nothing for me. Even with the spoiler ram faults the non-aero rear is so much cleaner and better looking The GT2 on the other hand <3

Are the silver and black 996's posted here GT2's? or Turbos with aero kits?

GT2's. Aerokits are very different (no where near as good looks wise).

POST 20Original post

Ah okay, thanks. I"m not a huge 996 fan but the GT2 is a good looking model.

I bought one, much prefer it to 996 and 991, and even like the wheels The 991 looks fine but both wheel types I have seen are way too fussy ( the centre locks and the 50 spokers shown above) Edited by Adam B on Monday 10th November 00:25

mr pg said: GT2's. Aerokits are very different (no where near as good looks wise). As has been said, the black one above is actually a GT2 kitted turbo, like mine was... ..and, to my eye at least, looks very similar. This is the Factory turbo Aerokit... (although I heard on the internet once that the GT2 bodykit was a very rare, by very special request only, option on the 996 turbo. Not sure if this is true however)

POST 25Original post

GT2 aerokit was indeed a "Tequipment exclusive" option on 996 turbo

POST 26Original post

991 turbo rear end design details may be somewhat subjective but I'm happy enough with the overall appearance and it didn't put me off buying one.

Aye , that's not bad apart from the usual complaint of too much detail on the boot. It would look far better with just the Turbo badge on IMHO.

POST 30Original post

Looks W-I-D-E, but the 991 Turbo narrower than a Jag F-Type.

If you've spent the extra wedge on the 'S' why not have the 'S' badge Agreed the 'PORSCHE' lettering is unnecessary.

POST 34Original post

Magic919 said: The S bit sounds like it's trying too hard. But they only said it once... IMO the body kits, Porsche or Techart etc just prove what a good looking car the basic Carrera is, none of the kits above improve the look of the car.

Much prefer to the 991 shape which looks bloated. All IMHO.

POST 36Original post

I had the pleasure of seeing a 991 Turbo S drive past me on my daily commute. I can't remember the last time I've stopped in awe of a modern Porsche. It looked amazing, just like a true supercar. In the flesh these things look special. Pocty.

POST 37Original post

IMHO, of each of the watercooled models, the GT3 has been the best looking each time. Although I must admit, I'm slightly in love with the 50th Anniversary 991's!

monthefish said: You have to be VERY careful doing so. Not as easy/simple as you might think... http://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/760754-carrer... Hmm, to be honest that does just seem like the owners error.. The ghosting left behind from the badge was to be expected as it was a 996 and the paint had seen years of sunlight, and dozens of washes and polishes, the paint under the badge is always going to look different.. Then he polished too much and broke through the clearcoat. I'd definitely be very cautious about doing any kind of modification myself on a £80-100k car, but in theory if it's done carefully when the car's new, it shouldn't present any issues - unless they are secured with lugs but that seems quite unlikely. If anything I'd just pay a good, insured detailer to remove / rearrange them. Edited by smithyithy on Friday 14th November 16:00

They need to stick 911 on the back to remind everyone its actually a 911. In some ways I think the cleaner looking AMG interpretation is actually more like a revised 911 turbo than what Porsche have done with the fussy looking rear end on the 991 T. If I were a betting man I would imagine that Porsche will stretch the tail-lights and revert back to single pipes for the 992.

POST 45Original post

I've seen a few 991 Turbos on the road now. They are growing on me and the rear is sooooo wide. Looks like a B2 bomber for the road.

POST 46 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

IMIA: if you stare at stifflers mum for long enough, she has redeeming features also. Once the Porsche design team put down the crack pipe on this design kind of design language, I will be a happier bunny. This is Porsche exclusives latest attempt, it looks like something that techart threw in the bin:

POST 47Original post

Clear rear clusters... has to be one of their worst design moves

POST 48Original post

Agree re clear halfords lights and the halfards aerokit wtf?! Nevertheless the standard car on road looks like a long range fighter bomber. I always liked Stiflers mum lol Its clumsy around the side vents and the leds at the front also look like an afterthought but apart from those two aspects on road when its flashing past you on other side of the road it looks fab imo. So wide and hunkered down.

POST 49Original post

I think the standard 991 Turbo looks good, in an understated way. However, a Carrera S for the past few generations has always looked better in my eyes.
