Back in February of this year, I ordered a 2003 996TT. At the time, 996TTs were still going for premiums at most dealers and I felt fortunate to have locked in MSRP. I wanted an X50, but questioned whether the increased power was worth the additional $17.5k. However, I didn't have to make a choice because no 2002 X50s were available and the X50 power kit was initially not available for the first 2003 orders. Thus, I ordered a non-X50 and intended to add many of the X50 components after the fact (e.g., GT2/X50 intercoolers, bigger turbos, etc). Every so often, people post on the various boards about TTs available at a particular dealer. Having read that some dealerships were offering meaningful discounts on turbos, I followed up on a few such postings out of general curiosity, but never very seriously because I figured the chances of stumbling onto my perfect car, and being able to negotiate a discount significant enough to walk away from my forthcoming 2003, was slim to none. Last week, Mooty posted on Rennlist that a couple of TTs were available at a particular dealer. He didn't post any details about the cars, but I was bored and made a call. I fully expected to hear that the cars were either sold, or purple, or the dealer was insisting upon MSRP. Much to my surprise, there was a new 2002 Black/Black 996TT X50 that had suddenly become available. The car was almost exactly what I had ordered -- other than the X50 kit, the only other differences were that it lacked a 6-cd changer and had a carbon fiber steering wheel (I had regretted not ordering this on my car). After some negotiation, they agreed to sell me the car for $9,500 below MSRP and add a 6-cd changer. That means the X50 power kit (bigger turbos, GT2 intercooler, strengthened transmission, etc., etc.) would only cost me $8,000. Compared to my 2003 non-X50 at MSRP, the choice was obvious -- I snapped up the X50. I take delivery of my new 2002 Blk/Blk 996TT X50 on Wednesday. I am flying to the Bay Area to retrieve the car, then driving it back in order to work off 350 of the 2000 break in miles. I have an appointment on Thursday at Wheel Enhancements to install the HRE 540Rs that have been gathering dust for weeks. My car will be at By-Design on Friday for Techart coilovers and sway bars, RUF exhaust and pedals, Bailey DVs, silver hood badge, and one or two other tweeks and upgrades (By-Design graciously agreed to take back the GT2 intercooler I had already ordered). The following Monday, my car will be at Paris Audio for a K40, V60 hands free kit, and garage opener switch. I am eternally grateful to the members of this forum. I have learned so much from reading your pearls of wisdom. Thank you Mooty for the scouting report. If you're available Wednesday evening, meet me at the dealer and I'll buy you a drink after collecting my car. If any others from our Bay Area (Northern California) brethren are available Wednesday evening, drinks are on me (non-alcohol for me -- I have a long drive -- half way on Weds evening and the remainder Thurs morning). Thank you Jack, Oak, Amir, and Ed K. for talking with me and sharing your wealth of knowledge. I look forward to joining you guys for weekend canyon drives -- the next round of coffees are on me. BTW, I got to see Oak's car this morning -- awesome car Oak!!! How did the dyno go? Enough of my infantile gushing -- I just sincerely appreciate this community. After eight agonizing months of unbearable waiting, which was exacerbated by my chronic impatience, the moment is almost here. Needless to say, I haven't slept much the past few nights, and I expect to sleep even less until Weds. I promise to post many pics, both before and after the mods. Thanks again for your invaluable assistance. Craig (L.A.)
