Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been lurking around the forum for about 6 months and this is my first post. I am looking to buy a Boxster soon. I found a 2000 Boxster S that is looking pretty good, it only has around 68k. I don't have any service history with the vehicle, so it makes me a little nervous. Working with the dealer to get a PPI done. I am looking for more info on decoding of the options. I did a search and found the list of option codes and VIN # decoders, but it does not show all that I have listed on the label in the frunk. Also, is there any way to tell with date codes if this 986 would have dual row IMSB or not?

POST 2Original post

There are online lists that cover all the options for this car, do a search and you will find everything you need. On 2000-2001 cars, the only way to know which style IMS bearing is in the car is to pull it apart and look. All of the "online" methods (VIN numbers, build dates, phases of the moon, etc.) have all proven useless.

POST 3Original post

Look for the 986 PET. The option codes are listed in section MSP-Pages.

Great! Thanks for the info. I will have to wait and see what the PPI finds.

POST 6Original post

Let us know what the PPI shows. We love tagging along thru the purchase process!

POST 7Original post

The PPI will not show the type of IMS the engine has. Unless the dealer can find an engine number showing a replacement and find out the date of the replacement which may give a hint. But, as JFP says, no sure thing especially in a 2000 which was a transition year.

Take a look at the below link for the engine number and corresponding bearing. However, it is well documented that this is often incorrect. Some 2000 have dual row and others have single rows. The only way to know is to drop the transmission and look at the flange. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Boxster_Tech/14-ENGINE-Intermediate_Shaft_Bearing/14-ENGINE-Intermediate_Shaft_Bearing.htm Here is a link to locating the engine number; http://986forum.com/forums/general-discussions/23965-engine-number-location.html __________________
