So I want to make my car sound a little throatier/deeper, and think a muffler delete is a good place to start. Yes, yes I can get a full exhaust system that will have less drone and be better but that's also $1,000 vs $100. I can always install the aftermarket exhaust if I don't like the results of the muffler delete. My question is, is there any expereince with a loss of backpressure due to removing the mufflers, and if so, has this caused any performance losses. It has been hard to find anyone who has done this on their Cayman / Boxster so I thought I'd post this up and find out. Side note: If anyone is selling their aftermarket exhaust or headers, let me know as I'm looking for a good deal on a used set.

There was a 987.2 Borla system on the ******** classifieds recently. He was asking $1450 last time I checked. No affiliation.
Back pressure is not a desirable feature in any exhaust system. The key is scavenge from header and collector design. My 987.1 has ~500hp, no cats and a tiny Borla muffler..
Is that a generic borla muffler or something made spesifically for these cars? If generic, which part #?
I want to say those are Borla 400481 mufflers. I'm not sure it's what you'd want but they are about $100 each.
I just want a better sounding exhaust without spending $1,000 when that would be better spent on track prep. The mufflers might be worth it to escape drone city, I'm just wondering how bad it would be without the mufflers..
It's going to be LOUD without mufflers.. Really loud.
Worst comes to worst I can always put back on stock mufflers Wondering with music up if it’s bearable/enjoyable
The only way you'll be able to listen to music is with ear buds... Maybe a DIY carnewal mod would make more sense? I gave a friend the Carnewal exhaust that was on my Cayman and he loves it..
Hm seems like an intersting mod, do you have any videos of what it sounds like as I'd be worried it wouldn't be "loud" enough. Also, a little off topic but would chopping the muffler off cause any CEL's or is that good since the O2's are only after the primary cats?
Really loud, like painfully loud. Street driven it would be a ticket machine. Don't most tracks have sound limits these days?
Joshuaj: Would love to hear details on how you are getting 500HP on your 987.1 . 3.8 liter conversion?
6.2 liter conversion.
Wow, never heard of that, thanks. Where would I go to get info?
It's probably not what you're thinking:
Definitely! One picture is worth a thousand words...
Haha, I wear ear plugs in my car unless I have a helmet on
If all you want is some nice sound, then the “free exhaust mod” (or whatever it’s called these days) works great. Search is your friend here. Back before I lucked into the Carnewal R setup currently on my car (LOVE IT, BTW), it had this easy mod and sounded terrific. Place the vent hole facing rearward where the slip connection can still connect both sides and if you want it to sound stock again, just loosen and slide the connector back over. See pic on left, with tips loose and rotated downward. Slide to the right and secure for nice sound, slide left back over the hole for stock. Second pic was from the rear looking past the tips. Easy peazy. No downside at all.
I came from the 370Z community (sold the Z last weekend) they call it the "washer mod" to create a gap between two exhaust pipes. I guess in the P-Car community we can call it the infamous " Clamp Mod"
I have a Carnewal GT exhaust on my Cayman R - Got it done by Cantrell in Kirkland (WA) shortly after I bought the car new - still love it! As soon as the snow melts and the summer tire embargo is lifted here, I'm off to my local mechanic to get an IPD Competition Plenum, GT3 TB and Carnewal manifolds with sport cats installed. For the money, to me this is the ideal system - plus it is outwardly indistinguishable from the factory parts. I just want to made sure my induction improvements are matched on the exhaust side.
