Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I read in a porsche publication(not sure which one) but porsche is offering a power kit for the 996 which will get the engine to 340/45 from 320. Now will they offer this kinda kit for the 1999-2001 996 or will it be just for the 2002-beyond. Also, the price they mentioned didnt sound very cheap. I think it was close to 9k.

You can only get a factory retrofit Powerkit for pre-2000 model cars. Here are the details: Carrera Powerkit

MMtech(rennlister)- you may want to ask him about that as he is planning to do the mod. He purchased it from Joe of Fabspeed and I think it runs $7500 and specs I heard is plus 20 bhp/20ftlbs gains. Regards. Mike P.S.- it may not seem so much but I thought 02 models output was low but from what I heard alot more noticeable trq at the low end and since it's coming from PAG it mite actually be worth it. I'm just trying to get you to do it so I can here you say good or bad : ).

Porsche factory power kits for the USA are called X50 for the Turbo and starting with 2003 the power kit will be called X51 for the Carreras. The price for the X50 for the Turbos is $17,700. The price for X51 has not been determined yet. I know of no way to retrofit these kits, I believe they are available only as an ordered option. I will post more info as I get it from Porsche....

Power Tech in NJ sent me some pictures today of my engine being removed. They will probably start the installation today. In addition the power kit that I'm having installed is a new updated kit direct from Porsche Motor Sport. I think the performance levels in terms of hp and torque are probably higher than what is currently listed on Porsche's web site. As far as the price is concerned there are a lot of parts dealers that will try to take advantage of the fact that this power kit is not meant for US distribution (not DOT approved). The power kit goes for around 6,900 euros. When importing the kit also consider customs and shipping which can get pretty expensive. I've seen some companies trying to charge $11,500 for this kit. If you guys want the kit at a reasonable price call Joe at Fabspeed. I waited about 3 months for the kit. I'll post new dyno charts after the installation and UNICHIP tuning are complete. -Mike

mmtech: I was admiring your "signature". Can you tell me what "rigid shims" are?

POST 7Original post

The carrera power kit is being introduced for 2003 as the X51 option for the non-turbo carreras. The list price is $13,990. This gets you aluminum GT3 exhaust manifolds (headers), a reprogramed ECU and as yet unconfirmed a different camshaft. The benefit is 25 hp and a much broader torque curve with the same peak torque. Drops the 0-60 by 1/10 and the 1/4 mi by 3/10 and adds 4 mph to top end. I have one on order.

POST 8Original post

Ed - you sure you want the nice looking Sport Design wheels ? They weigh 6-7 lbs more each than the new for '02 18" thin spoke Carrera wheels. ( 21 vs 28 lbs at the rear , for instance ). Yields better handling , ride , responsiveness since you are spec'ing X51 and 030 and trying to save weight with sunroof delete and GT3 seat. Just my opinion.

POST 9Original post

I need a set of wheels for the street. Track wheels will be either Fiske of BBS LM... still TBD.

POST 11Original post

"You can only get a factory retrofit Powerkit for pre-2000 model cars." Viken, the link says cars built before 12/00 as my 2001 was.

POST 12Original post

MMTech, Did you ever get the powerkit installed? What gains have you seen?

POST 13Original post

The factory powerkit for the 2002 cars is available as retrofit. The HP increase is 25HP.(from 320 to 345HP) The kit comes with alu intake, cylinder heads, cams, headers and a modified ECU. This powerkit is approved for the US. Only available for cars with manual gearbox.
