What engine speeds does everyone get during a cold start? By that I mean where the car has sat for about a 24 hour period. I used to get the car idling at ~1,200 RPM upon start up, then after about 20-30 seconds it would idle at 700-800 RPM. This was after it had warmed up. It would remain at this speed after that when it was idling. A few months ago it started to idle at ~1,700 RPM on start up and after about 20 seconds would settle at 700-800 RPM. Not sure if this is normal or not.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Could it be due to the start of your antipodean winter and colder initial start up temps?
That's what I initially thought as well but I could swear that this has only been happening for a few months and I have owned this car for several years. I always let it idle for about 30-60 seconds in the morning to let it warm up before driving off. I just started the car and it had been sitting for about 8-10 hours. It was a cold night, 12 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit), and engine speed was ~1,600 RPM on start up. After ~20-30 seconds it warmed up and idled neatly at ~700 RPM. I have no idea if this is indicative of a problem or if it's normal. I'm just afraid something is going to blow in the engine that could cause damage.
Guess we have different definitions of cold night. I have seen cold idles that high. If it seems abnormal for the car though get a code download. Preferably the Porsche specific ones, not just the generic OBD II codes. I'm assuming OBD II is world wide common denominator stuff so that they can be read without having a unique code reader for each maker. Get the generics if nothing else. Since the car is a motorized computer it's hard to proceed without a fault code. If something is going to blow it should show up. Don't think that's the case here though. It is possible to have in range faults that won't show but those tend to be more a nuisance thing that are a pain to sort. Haven't seen any of those cause damage other than the poor bloke that tries to diagnos them losing his hair.
