While stopped at a red light, should one have the clutch in and first gear already selected or left in in neutral until light changes. Basically, is there premature wear by having the clutch engaged just sitting there?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Shouldn't be any premature wear on the clutch friction surfaces *if* the clutch pedal is fully depressed. All bets are off if you're trying to use it to, say, hold position on a hill. You might have a bit of wear on the throwout bearing. That said, I always sit stopped in neutral, clutch out at a light, until just before needing to start. ed
I was always told to let it sit in neutral, and never to keep the clutch fully engaged unless necessary. That said, I'm horrible for going into a panic if I need to start up from 1st in a major rush and will embarrassing admit to stalling in the past if I'm not ready to go once the other light goes into yellow. Plus doesn't it hurt your leg to sit there with the clutch fully engaged?
My opinion is the same as Varejao.
