I know that this one has been beaten to death already. I'd like to get some feedback on each of the cars, not from a perspective of which is better, more on how their characters differ. I'm coming from a 2000 996.1 and considering changing to a 996.2. From what I've heard so far the biggest difference is in the character of the engine, specifically torque around the lower end being that much stronger with the 3.6, and the interior being better put together. I know Lee Sibley has a great video, and Total 911 had a great article some time ago. Looking to hear more thoughts

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What makes you want to go from a 996.1 to a 996.2?
Oh man....the .1 boys are going to sniff this out like a pack of rabid wolves! Haha. I can here the catch phrases now....

The performance differences between the VarioCam 5-chain and the VarioCam+ 3-chain M9X engines are so minute it's like splitting a frog hair. The interior design is the same. The Mk2 exterior did have some upgrades (e.g. Turbo headlights, redesigned bumper skins, side skirts, etc.), but that's obvious. Now, what is your real concern?
Do yourself a favor and get off rennlist ASAP! You can read about the topic and then try to weed through the bickering but nothing will compare to driving the car. Network locally and I have no doubt you can find someone that will let you take one for a spin. I did that when choosing suspension for my car.
Thanks for all the replies. So the real reason is that I found a 996.2 which is in better condition that my 996.1 (which Ive only had for a short time). Id need to put money into my 996.1 (clutch, flywheel, RMS, possibly IMS) as I have an oil leak to take care of and the flywheel looks to be on its way out. Id also be likely looking at coils and plugs My 996.1 has 135k miles, 55k miles on the motor. Its an AT motor, though its sparse on history. The 996.2 has more info on the history, has had clutch, flywheel, IMS, coils, plugs, done in the last 2-3 years. Its also a lot cleaner in condition, 95k miles on the clock Ive driven both, felt the torque difference, though I slightly prefer the full leather interior on my 996.1 relative to the base interior on the 996.2
Well, here's the issue - how are you going to sell that 996.1 with all those issues needing to be addressed? Once you address those issues, might not be worth selling the 996.1... I'll be honest, I have a 996.1 with a hot 3.8 motor in it, and I purchased and painted all the parts for a full Mk2 front end conversion. That conversion is currently becoming wall art since I haven't felt the need to switch it to Mk2 front end. But, up to you. -Matt
Good points. My 996.1 is sellable as is, but it would be an easier sell with a new flywheel / etc. Runs and drives fine, other than increasing noise and vibration at anything over 3500 rpm. Pulls strongly and no oil leaks on the garage floor, zero oil consumption. I dont have a preference when it comes to looks, both the 996.1 and 986.2 are beautiful cars in their own right Honestly I started looking into the 996.2 because it was in such great condition I also have a 986.1 that I need to sell. Put a tonne of money into that car, but I dont have space for both Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts. They have been helpful
Both the 996.1 and 996.2 are great cars. Tough to argue with a well sorted one of eithet versus one that still needs alot of work. If it's a better all around deal go for it. I have no complaints on my 996.2. It's a winner. Good luck!
Headlights !! ... the headlights are different, that's the only thing that really matters... But of course if you add up all the little bitty differences you may like one over the other....

.2 are a couple mm wider and dont forget about the glove box.
Thanks again everyone. The real question is how much I can get for my 996.1 if I decide to sell it, and how easy it will be to sell. The basics with that car are so right, the engine has less than 60k miles, it really needs a little TLC to really shine. Ill feel bad about parting with it My other option is to give it some TLC, and then try to find something a little more special (sports seats perhaps?) in a year or two. Trying to decide what my best option is
well advertise both the 986 and 996.1 which ever sells first is the goner.. nothing wrong with two 996's lol
If only It were that easy. I dont have space for two fun cars, so I would need to sell both the 986.1 and the 996.1. Both are great cars and Ive really enjoyed the experiences of having them. People knock the 9x6 generation but theyre missing out on great cars
I have a 991.2 Turbos and bought a 996.1 just for fun, I really expected to not like it (It was #13 Porsches I have owned) I LOVE it ...so much so I buying another one on Monday and 03 996.2. I taking the Mk1 to my lake house and keeping the Mk2 as a top down daily. These things are such a bargin!
Yep!
