Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, first post to the Porsche forums! Hoping you all can provide some advice. Im considering a few 996s, all with recent engine rebuilds. Two are rebuilt 3.4s and the last a 3.4 to 3.8, each with less than a few thousands since the build. What kind of issues, problems, considerations, etc. should I be aware of. Particularly for the re-bored 3.8. For instance 1. Whats break-in period? 2. SMOG issues (in California and other states) 3. Will it require specialized parts or upgrades down the line? 4. Typical problems and/or maintenance specific to rebuilds 5. and everything else youre aware of. All cars drive great. All were massive jobs with the major issues being resolved (IMS, RMS, clutch, AOS, etc.). Just want to be aware of what I might be getting myself into. Thanks in advanced!

Without the build sheet and knowing builders rep, its hard to tell, its all a guess...? Was it steel sleeves,, maybe with used oem pistons?, same used oem loko-sil block re-ringed old oem pistons, or old pistons in an old oem higher mile out of round loco-sil block..? Or top of the line Hartech nik'd or/LN nikies with new balanced crank and all new oem quality bearings/pumps/seals/injectors/upgrades/UAOS/accessories/ported Head job, etc. We've seen all the above builds reported on Porsche forums. Huge difference in outcomes more than likely in all the above type builds... Jmo

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Jmo. For the 3.8, the the owner is a tech at an indy German autoshop, unfortunately I'm not sure which one. But here's general description of what he provided me... - Surfacing cylinder head - Performing 5 angle valve job - Mahle piston/cylinders, 3.6 rods and crankshaft - replaced water pump, thermostat, vacuum reservoir, oil cooler, timing chain rails, coolant expansion tank - Upgraded IMS LN bearing Damn, should have taken picture of the build sheet. I saw it, just don't remember all the details. I'll see if i can get it, but i attached some pictures. I'll see what specific information in can get on the other builds.

POST 5Original post

I would surely like to know if the inserts were LNE type. I don't think Mahle makes cylinders liners for the 996.

POST 6Original post

Yep, second consideration is whose (what) internals did they use.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
